Looks like someone forgot to prelube... (prev. Owner)
The cam *was* a Crane .272, and has less than 1000 miles on it.

The circled lobe is actually pointing straight up. Can't really tell that, what with the fact that it is rounded off...

And, here is a better shot of the lifter that went on that lobe...

So, now I am putting a new, less mild cam in, to help make this a better daily driver.

That's a good idea. I'm doubtful, though, since I'm not the one that originally bought the cam.

bacon? cow.... my buddy did that at breakfast during midterms a year or two ago. Every person ordered a pork product, bacon, sausauge, whatever, he goes "wow they are gonna have to kill a whole cow for us!" He still hasn't lived it down.

No cam manufacturer is going to warranty that. It was either not installed correctly (lube) or not broken in correctly. I'm leaning towards the not broken in correctly.

I go though cams like water on the race engines. It looks like there may be a oiling issue on that lobe. Need to check that out before you reinstall new cam.Unsure how chevy engine lubes the cam and lifter but if I was you i would check what ever lubes those pieces and make sure it dont happen again. Both the cam and lifter where ground down, if cam had a soft spot on it only the lobe would have been gone.

Well upon further inspection, I found that the cam is stamped with a 1997 date, and that it was a Crane 274. Now that I think about it, it has probably been going bad since before I bought the truck, since I have always seem to have a fouled plug in that cylinder. I'm guessing that the previous owner bought the cam used, and it could have been going bad before it was put in the truck, considering that he told me that he put the cam in himself, and he didn't have the truck back in '97. I have heard of situations where the cam came apart, and the lifter went with it because of burrs on the bad lobe as it came apart. Think this might be the case?
