I have a stock, late '80's 454 that was a good runner. I have about 1 month until March 15th rolls around when a bunch of people are going off-roading.

The truck is an '80 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 longbed with a 4spd/205, 4.56 gears and 39.5" Boggers.

Whats the quickest and most economical way to go through the motor so it will put out enough power to spin the boggers (so I can attempt to be a show-off on the 15th).

I'm thinking just check bearing clearances, get a new cam and lifters and timing chain, and maybe put on some other heads I have (with larger valves).

What sort of cam would you run for a truck like I described?
I can get a regrind cam for cheap, but I always hear bad stories about regrinds.
