Which is better - A Dana 44 or GM Corp.10 bolt for the front axle of a 77 K-5. I have an opportunity to buy a dana 44 for a good price - but not sure how much I would gain. I am not sure about the gearing yet, but just wanted to know about the axle part of it.

    Thanks,
    BS

It seams that there are allot more parts available for the Dana44. More aftermarket mods too!! So I would go for the D44 over a 10bolt.

I have a ten bolt and there are some nice strengthening mods you can do to them. I haven't had any problems with mine.If I remember correctly the ten bolt hasa bigger ring gear to and splines than a Dana 44. I think

If there is nothing wrong with your 10 bolt, it is definitely not worth any time or money to change to a Dana 44.

Bottom line is that they are basically the same. I would not spend any money to swap one for the other.

Here are some basic stats between the two:
Dana 44 - 8.5" ring gear, 30 spline - 1.31" axle shafts, u-joint size is 297-x Spicer or equivalent (except for some earlier ones with the 260-x joint)
    10-bolt - 8.5" ring gear, 28 spline shafts (pre-'89 or so, '89-'91 or so had 30 spline - 1.31" shafts), 297-x u-joints.
Basically, if you already have a 10-bolt you won't gain much by swapping to a 44, but if you are starting from scratch I would get a 44.
