front shackle length?

Discussion in '1973-1991 K5 Blazer | Truck | Suburban' started by **DONOTDELETE**, Jun 12, 2000.

I was wondering what the stock front shackle length is from the center of the upper bolt to the lower bolt. Please and Thank you !!

I just got off my butt and measured mine on my '73. I got 4-1/16". I'd guess that they started at 4" new and the holes have elongated a bit after 27 years.

I'm running Super Shackles now(5 1/2" or 7"), they are longer and thicker than stock ones, but don't have that extra piece in the middle. The stock ones were bottoming out on me, so I went with the SS ones and couldn't remember the length of the old stockers !! I can get them 12" springs to flex better with the long ones too!!

Hey LKJR, you don't need to make 5-inch shackles. ORD sells a set that's made right, they're cad plated so they won't rust and they come with new greasable bushings and rifle-drilled bolts with grease zerks. Check 'em out at http://www.offroaddesign.com[IMG]

How are you running longer front shackles? Doesnt that throw your pinon angel out of wack?

I took the old ones off and bolted the new ones on !! LOL Actually they didn't change the pinion too much at the 5 1/2" setting, the 12" lift is what killed that.

Hey that LKJR post was me at a friends house. I actually wanted to make my own shackles. I work in a fab shop so pretty much everything is in my capabiltiy to make. I know about the ORD units, but there's just something ultra cool about machining and forming your own parts. At least to me, there is. I can get them powdercoated too, not as good as plating, but good nuff for me. [IMG]

correct me if i am wrong, but i thought if you put in a bigger shackle it will raise the front end but wont it also push the front axle forward some too, this is what happened on my blazer, it had a home made 3.5 front lift with just extended shackles on the front leaf springs rear shackle mount. I actually had tire rub with 33s due to the fact it pushed the front axle forward some. not unless they do it some other way.

You would have to have one hell of a long shackle to actually bring the axle forward, but it doesn't take much to change the pinion angle though. So how is the Blazer coming?

Oh well if it pushes it forward, I'll just hack some more out of the fenders and approach angle improved. But I don't think 1" is gonna change anything. A little bit of pinion angle but with the cv driveshaft, shouldn't be a prob.

theblazer is comming along good but slow, i started a new job and school is out so i have to take it back when i have a chance wich will be next week, it is primered right now, and will be getting color next week along with aligning everythign up. next step is to put in my 3/4 ton axles i already purchased, get my new 8 lug rims and new 38s. then trick out the interior then work on engine modifying(hmm big block maybe!!!)

hey i just thought of something? could you maybe somehow lower the (front leaf spring) front mount somehow and then use longer shackles to raise the front like 3.5-4 inches then use a shackle flip kit on the rear? would this work, how safe would it be, just wondering.

It's possible. I've heard of it being done on full size jeeps but I'm not sure how easy it would be to do on a K-5.

  18. There are quite a few people out there that do that for more lift with smaller springs.

Here is a idea. Drop the front spring hanger (fixed) somewhere like 2", and get extended shackles in the rear of the front. This would allow the front axle to be dropped (vehicle raised) and to maintain the correct angles.
