I do not see any wires comming from the fuel tank. I have an 82 k5 and the gauge is way past full all the time. where is this connection located. I know on top of the tank but is it a male prong sticking out or does the wire go inside of the tank???

I'm not sure about on a "82" but on a "87" it is in the top of the tank with the fuel pump. Should only be 4 wires, 2 for pump & 2 for sending unit. $.02

pink wire is gauge wire from top of tank (sending unit), black is ground, should be bolted to frame right near the tank.
