78 Blazer here and the Gas guage when tank is full is pegged to the right. When I am running on fumes it reads between 1/2 and 3/4 mark. I am thinking either a sending unit or a faulty ground somewhere. Is there any test I can do to verify, as I really don't want to buy a sending unit if I don't have to.

The sending unit should measure near zero ohms when the tank is empty and about 90 ohms when the tank is full. The gauge reading high is usually a bad connection in the circuit, which increases the resistance.
