    G.M.'s Ecotec 2.2L (2.0L for NHRA)
    750 hp at 9200 rpm, 400 lbs-ft of torque at 7000.......
Nearly 200 hp per cyl, with a block that is 95% stock.

"G.M. intends to upset the import world and establish dominance on their own terms."

The production engine will have 140 hp, but will with-stand over 350 hp. The 4-bolt aluminum engine will have provisions for external coolers as well as piston cooling bosses. Further-more, the production intake manifold is designed for nitrouse-oxide use.

The engines design is intended to mimic the sucsess of the SBC.
Zora Arkus-Duntov, "The succes of the small-block was based on the efficiant, speedy application of a few basic strategic elements:
    - Developing race-winning, affodable parts.
    - Rock-solid production design.
    - Makeing parts readily availble to the racer community.
    - Providing easily accsesed and applicable information to all intrested parties.
    - The envolvement of third parties to independently develop and suppliy race-winning components based on a seccessful design."

I'v seen some stuff on these new engines and If GM did their homework like they did with the 4.2 Vortec inline six in the new Trail Blazer then these Ecotech 4cyl should be a hit. I have also seen turbo and supercharged versions that seem to pump out the power. GM could be poised to be a power in the Sport Tuner market with Honda losing a lot of support with their latest Civic model and it's bland styling and more restrictive engine.
I just hope the Cavaliers and Saturuns don't get all those lame stickers.
Also Suposedly GM is working on a turbo charged 5cyl version of the 4.2 Vortec said to put out well over 300 hp

Too late - there's several Cavaliers running around here with 'em, and one even has a "Type R" sticker.

<font color=blue> I'm thinking the sae thing , I want to see them smoke the competition too ......but if the price to pay is seeing a ton of Cavaliers covered in stickers and toting fart mufflers, then I don't want to see it happen !

There's some kid with (God I wish I was making this up) a fullblown rice-treatment FORD FESTIVA running around west Tucson. Even got a wing on top of it.

I definatly need to get a pic of this one guy.

Fart muffler, yellow (bright yellow!) interior, black car, silver clothes hanger for a wing...yes...it's ugly!

I think GM needs to come out with a "Type Z" sticker /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Further proof of G.M. intent to dominate the class,
When the engine was first unavailed, G.M.'s top brass out-numberd the Jurnalists covering the event.
    (un-heard of in the field).

If I were to read between the lines and make a few assumtions. I would suspect that the worlds largest automotive manufacture must have lost a noticable portion of the market, possibly to the imports. And the Genneral wants it back. "Race 'em on Sunday, sell 'em on Monday".
    This should be pretty cool..

    And this just in....
Toyota enters Indy car raceing and is currently campaning to run the Pace-car. (2003/4 ???)

hmm, it'd be nice for a rebirth of the V-8''s again, but I'm guessing thats just never going to happen.... ever.... :-/

hopefully, GM can kill the ricers good...

As long as the aftermarket proformance parts are made available, it should do good. The ricers wouldn't have been anything without the aftermarket preformance products.

Either would the SBC, if you think about it. Thats what made that engine as great as it is. Performance parts and a stong foundation from the factory.

The V-8s aren't dead, as a matter of fact, they are stonger now than ever. It's just not for the "backyard" wrencher any-more.

Take a 5.3L out for a spin, they are very impressive!

    5.3? thats only like.... 1/2 of my 454.... :-P

j/k I've learned that most dealers are very nervous about letting me on thier used car lots, let alone drive their cars around on test drives... think it has something to do with the ugly ass primer spotted 77 suburban I drive in the lot with?

Unfortunaly... V-8s are not dead, but they are on the way to that.

Look at how many cars have them. Look where all the technology is going.

    Its a sad time.

You do have a point, but the SBC strait from the factory still was alot more fun then a ricer strait from the factory, IMO.

I work to make the lost foam foundry coatings for the new 4.2 liter inline sixer for GM. Awesome engine....they will be bringing up the torque shortly. They just pushed back the L-5 to October for the ramp-up...you didn't hear this from me. Ponies on the six are getting up around 270 plus stock!
