Some of you may have read in the news that the G8 Summit starts this week in Canada. I live about 20 miles from where the summit is being held, and let me tell you, I have never seen so much military and police presence in my life!!!

Yesterday morning a local guy flew his Cessna into the no-fly zone and got intercepted by an F-18 and 3 attack choppers a mile from my house. The highway has been full of convoys led by armored troop carriers, and it seems like there are cops on every street corner.

I haven't seen any protesters yet, but I'm sure they are on the way. There's been talk of massive demonstrations in my town, so things might get interesting in a couple of days. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

So keep your eyes on the news next week. Chances are you'll get a chance to see some footage of my area on TV. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

Hmmm.... Things are kind like that where I live too.
No military. But I have never seen so many cops. They are everywhere.
Were having a Biker Jamboree in my town.
I guess the law is afrade the Hells Angels and the Mongols might start shooting it out again. like they did in Harrah's casino in Laughlin Nv last april.

I can deal with the bikers ok most of them are cool and its nice seeing all those great machines.

But I just couldn't see a bunch of anti capitalist, commie, tree hugging, hippies showing up where I live. Hunting season might open a little early /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

Be careful if yur driving your K5 around those looneys hate our trucks.

I wondered the same thing as I first saw that and thought it had something to do with a Goat Summit instead of G8 Summit. /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Wonder if those dang Canadians are up to something with goats and they're having a big meeting up there about it. /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif /forums/images/icons/blush.gif /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

Me - "Wow, 8 replies in a couple of hours!!!" /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Me reading through the thread /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

    Me replying /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

You guys have to read up on current events. The G8 summit is where the leaders of the 8 most economically advanced nations meet and talk about how they are going to address issues like poverty, 3rd World trade, and the war on terrorism. Up until now there have been trouble with protesters, but the way they handle security has changed since 9/11.

And guys, we don't like goats, we like beavers. In fact, I LOVE beaver!!!! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I don't think Greenblazer could get very close to the G8 meeting due to the Hemp sniffing dogs. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

OMG... Paul, did ya ever see that show that comes on from "This hour has 22 minutes"? Its called 'talking to Americans'. I didnt think it was true till now!
Current events. Its a wonderful thing. The G8 summit is only the largest world leader gathering to happen anywhere, and this is the first since Sept 11. Thats the reason for the security. It has nothing to do with goats at all. There are lots of guys from this base there now, as well as more than a few of our jets. I worked my hole off last week getting all the jets they need ready to go. We are working a 24 hour standby shift all next week too.
Good luck Paul, stay out of the street bro! Dont think you want to get caught in the middle of some protest or sumthin!

I don't think this is the first since 9/11, they had one in New York City a few months ago. I rmember there being quite a few police and National Gaurd around for it.

Actually, Ratch, this is the first G8 Leader's Summit since 9/11. There have been a couple of economic summits as well as a security summit in the last few months, but this is the first time that the all the Presidents and Prime Ministers of the G8 nations have met since Sept. 11.

I was thinking about you when I saw the F-18 above Canmore. Apparently there's supposed to be 2 F-18s patrolling the no-fly-zone 24/7, with 4 more on emergency standby at Calgary Intl. Airport. There's also a couple of USAF AWACs taking turns monitoring the Summit area 24/7. It's been repeated over and again that any plane caught in the wrong place will be shot down no-questions-asked. /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

I'm personally not too worried about running into protesters. Canmore town centre is across the highway from my neighborhood, and most of the vagrants hang out there. If they decide to cross the line into the residential areas I have a feeling that us locals will fiercely defend our property. There's quite a few crazy mountain folk here that wouldn't take kindly to strangers smashing windows and torching vehicles...../forums/images/icons/wink.gif

There's nothing wrong with legitimate public protests, but somehow the G8 always seems to attract nutbars and losers. If they're smart they'll stay away from my house. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

well I believe the teamsters union was part of the protest of the WTO in seattle.
so are you calling them long haired?
of course TV will show you the 'real story' when it comes to people legally protesting the erosion of YOUR RIGHTS.
have you ever looked into a single social issue with more then what you see on TV? it really doesnt seem like it by your posts on this forum.
Green Blazer is trying to awaken apethetic people like yourself.
I think that is a foolish cause as you seem to like your slumber, but it is a very noble undertaking none the less.
