What would make a gas gauge mess up? Like dont give real good readings and when you fill up it stays full for a wile then then when you get low your LOW?

I would say the sending unit is going bad.

If you have dual tanks do you have 2 sending units?

I had the same problem in my 87 jimmy. turns out the cover plate the sending unit and the gas lines run through into the tank was cracked. The whole sending unit and fuel pump would rock back and forth giving me bad readings. Had it welded and no more problem.
