Under my K5 (74) there is the front crossmember that holds the tank up. I am wondering if I can romove that member and make my own that goes farther forward. So I can get a longer flatter homemade fuel cell to fit. If I move the member more forward it will be above the rear diff. And I am wondering if the diff will make contact. Other than cycling the suspension to see clearance how will I know. So in other words...
Can I move the front crossmember forward to make more room for a longer and thinner homemade fuel cell with out having rear diff clearance isues?

Yes you can but like you said you have to cycle your suspension to check for clearances, and do not remove a cross member without replacing it somewhere close.
