Well I am pretty sure the axles are the origionals on my 89. Does anybody know the code for gears in an 89. I will be selling them soon and don't want to open them up untill they are out.

On some axles there's a tag riveted to the pumpkin that has the ratio stamped into it. It will either be traditional 3.73:1 or 41:11 (same thing) this will designate what orginally came in that axle, not necessarily what's in there now. There's also a way to tell be comparing revolutions of the driveshaft to the revoultions of the tire. (i.e 4 revolutions of the driveshaft to 1 of the tire equal 4:1) Check my math though, my brains cramping. Good luck.

Why do people keep calling it a Bronco!!!!! [IMG]

OK the tag is not on the axle, and I am looking for the code that would be on the tag in the glovebox.

are the axles still on the truck? if so have someone watch the driveshaft and someone watch the valve stem on the rim. one rev on the rim to how many on the drive line. 3 3/4 turns on the drivshaft should be 3:73s little past 4 would be 4:10s or 4:11s. hope this helps.

Where have you heard/seen this? The limited slip tag is bolted to the diff cover using one of its bolts, but the axle code AFAIK, has ALWAYS (since the 60's) been stamped into the passenger side axle tube, facing forward as installed in the vehicle.

No I have not...but I know that some of the big cars (10 bolt rears) in the 80's got 3.23's, and they may donate them to my truck, instead of 3.42's that are in it now : )

I've seen Fords I know with a little aluminum tag attached thru one of the bolts on the 8.8s diffy cover. Don't know about remembering a GM with it. Not to say they haven't had em.

Your not looking in the right place, try this stamped into the passenger side axle
tube, facing upward (toward the sky) as installed in the vehicle.
    Good luck
