Check your glovebox or pull the cover and see for yourself for sure. There were many ratio's offered from the factory.

If you're sure the diff or gears have never been swapped look at the codes in the glovebox:

    GU4.......3.08
    GU6.......3.42
    GT4, 5X1......3.73
    GT8, GT5......4.10
    G80.......Gov-Lock

I would pull the inspection cover off, that way you will know for sure. Count the number of teeth on the ring gear and then on the pinion gear, divide the number of ring gear teeth by the number of pinion gear teeth and that will be your ratio. (Like 41 on the ring gear & 11 on the pinion = 3.73 ratio)

No need to count teeth...the ratio is stamped on the edge of the ring gear./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I have seen several that did not have it stamped on the side of the ring gear. But you are right, if it is stamped on there it is easier than counting.

I haven't seen a GM axle made after 1967 that hasn't had the count on it. (50-100 of them give or take) Besides, all GM parts (that I can think of, maybe not some sheetmetal) have casting, mold or part numbers on them, ring gears are no exception.

Yeah I know, but there are a hell of a lot of ring & pinion sets out there running around that are not factory GM parts. I bought a Richmond brand a few months back and it was not stamped on the ring gear. So who's to know if this guy has a factory GM r&p in his rig without looking ?
