I'm droppin the tranny (sm465) in my 88 and was wondering if anyone knows how to remove the stick
(floor mounted gear shifter). I've got the rubber shift boot and knob off, just need to remove the stick and i'm on my way. Thanks

Did my sm465 last month. Mine is the cover-mounted shift rod, like it sounds you have. After you remove the boot, you'll see a metal cap. Just push down on this cap (I used a piece of 1 1/2 inch PVC pipe slipped around the shift rod) and rotate the shift rod counter-clockwise. The rod is attached similar to how a light bulb (1157 model) is secured to the bulb holder. Hope that makes sense. Oh and be careful, I removed my trans without a trans jack and it is very heavy.

Push down on the cap, but don't try to rotate the shift rod, just rotate the cap CCW. It is easy to do with a pair of channel lock pliers.
