    No tech here just funny.

My 89 Crew cab is empty. R-12 system of course. I am calling around differnt places that list A/C service and repair to get quotes on conversion and refill.

    1st place says around $200
    2nd place says $150 plus R-134
    3rd place $125
    4th place $250

My wife says laughingly call Bob Williams (stealership) so I do. He says he has to call me back so i give him my # 10 minutes later he calls back and tells me with materials and labor.

    $1800....

WTF I almost started laughing at him on the phone but I just said thanks and hung up. That is just rediculous.

i recently took a 6hr a/c class for autos and there is cheep ways of converting them and the best ways to convert them. do your homework and get the correct way as it will proform and last longer the better way.

just to give you a few quick things. r-12 is 4 - 5 times bigger than r-134a at the molecular level. this means if you have a leak with r-12 it will me 4-5 times faster leak with r-134a.

also the oil in the sytem is 2 totaly ddiffrent kinds.

last some compressors cant be reto fitted as thay just wont work with r-134a

:doah: oh crap forgot no tech in this area.

but ya 1800 is kind of steep for that. :eek1:

I called the dealer for a heater core replacement on a 99 S10 blazer, they said $1100.00 plus the AC recovery and recharge! i dit it my self and it sucked so bad that next time I will just sell the damn thing if it breaks. note to all, DO NOT buy a s10 blazer with a bad heater core and think its a easy fixer/good deal. almost was worth the 1100.00:doah:

If it hadn't been for the headaches and the soggy floor I would have left my sister's s-10 blazer that way until she made me drive it for a week..... worst part is she had wrecked it so many times it wasn't worth $1100 to begin with and dang sure wasn't worth my weekend of fixing it:angry1:

Whoever you get to do it should at least.
    Evacuate your system.
Put a vaccum on. And hold it it for at least 25 minutes.
    Install a new dryer
    New oil compatable with R134a
Instsall new o rings and seals
DONT LET THEM PUT ANYKIND OF STOP LEAK OR SEALANT IN.!!!!!! = DEATH
I am guessing the shop that quoted 250 for the change over is the one to go with. That is about the right price to have it done right at a reputable shop.

The way to refil a R-12 A/C system is with this cool stuff called Freeze 12. It's practically the same thing and you don't need to convert to 134a. I haven't ever seen my dad charge that much to convert a system from R-12 to 134a. It is quite simple.

No, he said that Freeze 12 sucks. I don't like the stuff either and agree that you should just do it right the first time.

She said, as I read it, 2 things, one was about freeze 12 and the other about what her father charges to do conversions from 12 to 134.

Oh yeah, and when did someone declare it to be "Tech Time with Timmay" in the lounge?

if you own a a/c machine and suck something other than r-12 or r134a in it and trash it and contaminate your full tank you will be vary unhappy. 1 local shop sucked some forgin stuff in from a florida car serviced down there and cost them close to 3k to get machine fixed. :eek1:

take that and eat it .:doah:
