I'm finally getting a beater. a friend has a late 70s GMC truck with a blown engine, but a good tranny and a crappy body that he will sell me for $100. It has a 350 2 bbl but ti threw a rod. There is a gas station near me that has a '83 or '84 Suburban that is a peice of sh*t that they are about to take to the junkyard. It has a 350 2 bbl that needs new rings, and smokes a lot. I can have that for $100 too. So all i need to do is pull bothe engines, do some ring work, and put the running one in the GMC. All for $200!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cool deal! Keep a small notebook and write down EVERY part, bolt, screw, gasket, etc. that you buy during the $200 buildup. When you're ready to drive it, let us know what it really cost! [IMG]

[IMG] So you've had "good" deals like that too Harry?

90K5, the $100 pick-up is probably worth chucking a motor in but I'd pass on the "smoking, on its last legs 350". Just go buy a $300 runner from the boneyard, if the Suburban 350 is already smoking, you'll probably end up spending more time and money on your "beater" than doing your yards.

    Just my opinion.

Oh yeah! It's one of those "while I'm in here..." things. You just keep buying parts and fixing stuff. [IMG]

I hear that. I get all sorts of that stuff working on my 75 Firebird. I like to call it the "Oh sh*t" syndrome. You take one thing off and , Oh sh*t, there are 3 more things behind it screwed up.

I talked to the guy and the GMC has a 327, with a bad rod bearing. it has a TH350 that was rebuilt about a year ago though. And it has a good carb. The one at the gas station needs a carb, so I could swap them out.

The guy wiht the GMC wants 200 to 250 for it though, I was wrong about the price.

I think I'm going to get the truck, because its a pretty goo deal for the tranny alone, and the body is pretty straight, just ugly as hell. I'll just let the truck sit in the driveway for a while while i get an engine for it. That $100 is a piece, I haven't even seen it yet, but I remembered there is no carb on it, no plug wires, etc., so not really worth my time to put everything on it to just see if its OK, and it isn't.
