    I have been using this:http://free.grisoft.com/doc/Get+AVG+FREE/lng/us/tpl/v5
I downloaded AVG free. Been using it for about a month now on my notebook.. It works good and takes few system resourses. Gives good basic protection for home use and use on Wi Fi networks.
I have http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/personal.htm On my PC
It gives great protection! A lot better program than the Norton anti virus that orginally came with the machine. I like it because it has WI Fi protection that alerts me if anyone tries to hack into my WI FI network. It also is a terror on spyware.

You got that right! I personally like system suite utilities and anti virus and also ghost surfer platinum. I have had good luck with both of them I do not like Norton.

I have been running McAfee for a long time and recently have been playing with Avert and AVG Freeware programs. At this point I have disabled McAfee and have been using AVG. For a Free program it does pretty well.

I would also install Lavasofts Ad-Aware program and Spybot. It helps keep all that ad and spy stuff off the computer
    I'd start there...

I had norton 2004 pro and it sucked a$$. I now user pc-cillin 2002 because i got it free with some other program. Trend micros pc-cillin is the #2 virus protection prgm in the world. #1 in english. Also dl sygate personal firewall for free. Best dam free software ever. Oh and like rj said unless you have a firewall dont smash the piggy to win a free ipod. Dont go to all those pornosites and dont use emule kazaa or bareshare or anything like that unless you have a firewall.

I run same and also AVG free also. Running both works good and I have no conflicts(norton and avg). Plus I just downloaded Microsofts NEW beta spyware remover/shield. Its cool, just disable the "phone home" functions.

I am wary about these online scanners. Opening up your computer to "anyone" is just plain crazy. Even good companies have bad people.

Using online scanners is no more dangerious than downloading music, games, and other stuff form file shareing sites.
When you do an online scan you download the scan engine and the virus files.
The virus files are stored on your HD the scan engine is in your temp net. files.
You do the scan it all hapens on your computer. Not over the internet. When or if you finnd viruses the scan engine provides links to the anti virus site that tell you how to clean it. No body goes poking around in your puter....
