I know the subject line sounds like some kinda twisted adult entertainment that only a sicko would...Um...anyhow...

I am thinking about getting a 3/4ton parts truck. The one I was told about has a D60, I think, and some other desireable parts. My guestion is, since I dont know what to look for....are there good D60's and bad D60's?

If it is 3/4 ton, be carefull. Stock only had 10 bolts or D44's. A D60 may have been swapped in. Look at the passengers side spring mount/perch. If it has 2 bolts and a u-bolt, it is a 60. If it has 2 u-bolts its a 10 or D44. Good luck, I hope you get a 60. To my knowledge, any Chevy D60 should do. There were some version that had ball-joints instead of kingpins but I believe that was only for Ford or Dodge. Wes (thatK30guy) might be of better assistance.

There are some closed knuckle ball joint looking D60's that you DO NOT want. I don't know if GM used any of those though.
Also, like Leadfoot said, 3/4 ton GM's came with D44 in the front.
Another sign, is the bolt pattern holding the steering arm on the axle. A dana 60 has four bolts in a square pattern, anything less has three bolts like your blazer.

Good things come in small packages. Good things come to those who wait. So, if you're waiting for a small package, that must *really* be sweet.

Dawson, GM has never used a 'closed-knuckle' axle. The D60 front was started in '77, so, everything from then was already 'open-knuckle'.

What is this military D60 you are looking at? Is it just the axle, or a complete vehicle? If its just the D60 axle itself, it more likely will be one off the M-series trucks. Those 1 1/4 ton's are pretty much the same as the civilian model K30's. If you are looking at the Kaiser Jeep's, then those are the closed-knuckles. If you are looking at this axle, pass on it, no matter how good the deal is.

Ok, you are looking at a 3/4 ton truck, and it is said to have the D60 front on it. Be very careful. 3/4 tons came with D44's and 10B axles. The D60 was only available on the 1 tons.

I have heard of the HD 3/4 tons, but NEVER once have I seen a D60 on one. [IMG]

The best way to check is by the explainations as told by the previous posts.

    Dawson,

The two 60's that I just received are exactly as Wes has described and are off of a mid 80's CUCV.

Nope! Thats a good thing!! At least the 14FF rear will bolt right up into a Blazer!!! If you had a 'true' 1 ton 14FF, then you would have had to relocate the spring perches and shock mounts. But being the truck is a 3/4 ton, and the fact it has a D60 under it, you found a great buy!!! [IMG]

As for 'good/bad' on the D60, there are none!!! Everything is good. The only 'bad' thing they have are the 'weak' outer shafts which have 30 splines. But those can be swapped out for some beefy 35 spline shafts and new lock out hubs.

Just about everything else on those axles are bulletproof and nothing else needs to be changed. Nothing else was ever changed from the year it came out up to the final year it was made, which went from '77 to '91.

Dawson, the p/u version is the great truck you are looking at. Buy it!!! Those D60 from the CUCV vehicles came out with 4.56 gears and some had Track Locks.

The 35 spline outers are just an aftermarket add-on to beefing up a 'weak link' on the stock 30 spline outer shafts. They are somewhat like 40% (I think) stronger than stock. The splined end at the lock out hub part on the 30 spline shaft 'necks' down, where as the 35 spline shaft is a solid straight shaft with no taper.

ORU, Dynatrac are some of the few who make or sell these 35 spline outer shafts.

Its just the axle. Guy I know found another guy who has about 20-30 of them, but doesn't know what he has. I am picking up one of them. The guy I know is buying all of them. He thinks he can sell all of them locally, but if he doesn't, and wants to ship them, I will pop them up here. I should get it from him on Sunday. How much do the 35 spline outers cost? Are they really worth it? Thanks!

Sweet. I already have a 14FF in the rear, so, and extra one never hurt anything, right?! I hope it turns out to be what they claim, but ya never know I guess.
