Ok, when the truck is at full running temp, I can hear through the floor board around the front of the hump, I get this whinny, sounds. Almost sounds like when you take a playing card and let it hit the blades of a turning fan, but with the whinny noise.
More details. It does it when its in neutral, drive, park, whatever. Mostly you can hear it when sitting at a stop light. It increases with the speed of the motor.
At first I thought it was something from the T-case rebuild but sitting at a stop light the T-case isn't turning so Im thinking something more up front like maybe a vacum leak, torq convertor or maybe even like an oil pump starting to go. I have good oil pressure and the truck seems to be running fine. But this doesn't sound like its going to do anything but get worse.
Any ideas would be greatly apreciated.
One more note, I have tried laying up under the truck, but the sound is nothing like what I can hear from inside. Which confuses me even more. And yes I have double checked to make sure the fan motor (heat/ac) was off.

How's it shifting? My S10's tranny toasted once and made noise pretty similar to what you describe, but there was also a noticable higher rev and harder shift when that happened. I don't remember if I heard the noise before the tranny blew or if it was a result of the tranny blowing.

In any event, when I got everything apart, the torque convertor had a long crack running down the neck starting at the drive notches.

Also, maybe a flywheel to convertor bolt coming loose making the flywheel flap a little and whine?

A cracked fly wheel can make some strange sounds, almost like a chirping noise, w/ a click to it.

Well, for the most part it shifts like it always has. DEpends on the amount of throttle. Its smooth when easy, and hits hard on heavy throttle. Its does tend to vibrate a little bit at different areas of the gear range. Like say right at the beginning of second gear adn then right when it goes into overdrive it will rattle a bit then smooths out.
I have the TCI tranny in the garage that I haven't installed yet. But the noise is just bugging the piss outta me.

IS the an auto trany if so it could be the ft pump which will make some sound, You can here the ft pump on the 01 burban with it setting still and all the fans and stuf off and there is NOTH WORNG WITH IT! You can also here the clutch disc on the 72 setting still at a light with the peddel pushed in.

10-4. I guess the thing that bothers me most is it wasn't doing this before I converted the T-case to fixed yoke (241)
But I know that the T-case isnt doing anything when sitting still other than the vacum line coming from the top. If this line had a small leak in it, could it be the culprit? Also, what is the vacum line for in the T-case operation?

Is it a 208?? I only have a vent exiting mine, no vaccuum. My S10 transfer case (NP207) did have vaccuum for some of the front axle automatic locking actuation, though.

Sorry or answering that I don't know what it might be for!

I'd check that out too. Cracked flexplates or cracked converter mounting flanges I have heard/seen, all make MORE noise when accelerating from a stop. As relatively common as the problem is, I'd check it out.

Its a 241. Sorry that is a vent hose and not a vacum. I dont know what I was thinking.
Update.... As I pulled up the driveway today, there is a little hump say for flex posing, as I started to nudge up to it, the sound stopped. So I backed up, then it came back, nudged forwaard again adn it went away.
This is really tripping me out here. I know it has nothing to do with the front end as the front D-shaft is out. The rear shaft is brand new CV. The tranny fluid id topped off and "RED"
    this is too wierd.
anyway I'll look at it some more this afternoon adn see what I can find. But I dont think I'll be pulling the tranny back to look at the flywheel or flexplate.

MAN!!!! You guys wouldn't believe what the problem was. LMMFAO!!!!!!![IMG]

It was a vibration coming from the fuel lines vibrating against one another, right where the hard line stop and the braided starts. Yep you guessed it, it runs right up behind the dash, on the enigine side of the firewall of course, but thats where the noise was coming from.
Anyhow, I bent the lines away from one another and no more noise!!!!
    Woo whoooooo!
