How much would you spend on a device that can increase the gas mileage of your truck by 4-5 mpg?

    I would say $1000

Driving your rig 15,000 miles a year:
    $3,000 a year at 8 mpg
    $1,800 a year at 13 mpg

There isn't anything that can increase my fuel mileage that much except a Diesel engine swap. I know very little about how to time a Diesel or how to rebuild the engine although it's not much different than gas, it'd all be a shot in the dark for me.

So the answer to your question is I don't know what I'd pay, because there isn't a practical solution to your problem.

Take the $1000 and buy a Geo Metro crapper, or something.

What if the industry sold a hybrid conversion for 73-91 trucks that gave you 4-5 mpg more mileage is what I should have said instead just "a device".

so in order to save $1000, you're going to spend $1000? doesnt make much sense IMO. why not just spend the $1000 on gas, and leave your rig the way it is. a good tuneup, and a quality aftermarket ignition MIGHT get you SOME gain, but not likely 4-5mpg. or is there something else wrong with your rig that you need to fix?

It's called over drive. It might get you a 3. That's only if your geared right for the 35's. You need to have 4.56 then a OD would work good with 35s.
OD is more then $1k by a long shot.

just by those numbers alone in one year he is saving 1200 dollars. one year. now, take the initial cost of 1k away, in that same first year he saves 200 dollars. what about every other year after that? and i bet money on the fact that you could put that same 1k you spend on it into your taxes. clean air tax return.
it would be worth it. i plan on running a 454 in by blzer on propane.

what if you - reduced the 3 daily trips to town to once a day? car pool to work?

by doing so, you easily could drive the 8mpg truck only 10,000 miles a year. at the $1.60/gallon you used earlier, it would cost $2000/year in gasoline.

there is a savings of $1000 and you didnt open the hood.

    My answer is NO
