So, I finally got off my lazy arse and decided to give knifemaking a try. I'm stilly pussy-footing around about the gun kits. I think that might have to wait until I move off base ;)

I've got two knifes I'm going to build. The first one is an actual kit knife (pre-made scales and whatnot). I'm going to use that to get an idea about fitment/finish.

The second one I ordered a bare blade/tang. It's a full-tang clip-point blade made from 440C, 3 5/8" blade. I'm going to try to wrap the handle and do some filework on the spine. We'll see how that turns out (don't worry I'll take photos).

For those that are interested, the kit knife is a Daryl Ralph kit (costs less than $20).

Here's a photo of what the knife kit should come out like:

I've given that a lot of thought also but backed out because it'll sit on the side like the rest of my projects :doah: , except I wanted to make the blade myself.

go for it and post up the finished knife. :D

Next project knife would be a balisong. I love balisongs. One of the most beautiful knife designs ever.

Blacksmithing has been a secret interest of mine for a long time. I had a nice conversation with Heather last night about all the things I'd like to have the time and money to do. I forgot about smithing.

On a side note about smithing. I know how to make chain mail. Time consuming but it's pretty easy and a lot of fun! :)

Oooo.... That gives me a neat gift idea....

No problem. I've got a really neat idea for that bare blade knife now.

Do some filework on the spine for a thumbgrip, polish up the blade and handle surface, use a good gun blue on the whole thing, and wrap the handle in 550 chord. I think it should look pretty good, we'll see how it turns out.

I picked up a bolo knife in the Philippines, years ago. The blade was made from a car leaf spring. My dad now has it, and uses it as a machete. You can hammer that thing into a tree and jump on it. It actually holds an edge very well. The grips are water buffalo, and after almost 30 years, no cracks or splits.

I've always been fascinated with knives, weapons, and armor. Just finally getting around to exercising my interest some. I say knives seperately because some knives are tools and collector items, and not weapons... but I digress, that's a conversation for a different thread.

Wow, I didn't know knife kits were that cheap...really looks like a hobby I'd like to get into.

It'd definitely help pass the time that I spend going crazy in the winter as well. :doah:
