Went to the local Chev dealership the other day looking to order the socket to remove the hard top on my Blazer. Had the part # from the GM Factory manual and everything. Guy on the counter looks at me and says "Yep! We can get that but not for you." WHAT?? Turns out they can only bring it in for their garage but not to sell. The guy tells me to check with Snap-on or Mac tools.

Anyone know of a part # for the T-40 Tamper-resistant Torx Bit that I need for the hardtop?

    Thanks
    Brian

They sell that bit at autozone or just about any other tool/auto store. More than likely you will have to buy the set instead of the individual T40.

i've bought three or four from the local parts store, and grand auto (checker/kragen/kmart). just tell them what it's for, and they'll usually let you walk out to your truck and eyeball it.
sorry i don't kave the number. when my co-worker takes his smoke break in a few, i'll go out there with him. search my center console real quick for the bit, see if it's got a number.

Is that the one meant for those $%^#@ security bolts with the hollow center?

    Thanks

on my 89, it has the torx-head bolt, with a little nipple in the center. on the normal torx, you can jam a phillips or slotted screwdriver in there and kinda force it. the security torx have the extra nipple, so you need the specific bit.
i really think i'm gonna swap 'em for some regular bolts. a couple of the nuts are stripped or something, so it's gonna be a project, once i start.

It really depends who you get a hold of down at the dealership. At my dealership I always go to the same guy,he always gives me the wholesale price and will order anything that is still available. That is a load of BS on there part. I'm sure that GM included a wrench with that truck, they have to. On oldmosbiles they gave out special wrenches to take off the wierd hubcaps they have. Why wouldnt they give you the wrench to take off the top. If you get them off I would just get some of the normal old style ones from LMC or the junkyard. If it were me I would get a hold of the supervisor and find out what his problem is. If you can't find anything my dealership is good to me. Its Knoepfler Chevrolet, there site is www.knoepflerchevrolet.com, there number is 1-800-942-0547, get to the parts deparment and ask for Joe Kunkel. He helped me work out a list of parts for the summer, I'm getting a new bed and tailgate and I'm not a body shop. Good luck

I got mine from Snap-On (#FTXR40E2) for $18.50 - If you aren't into spending so much, Pep Boys/AutoZone/etc. usually sell a Lisle for about 5 or 6 bucks.

That's what I wanted to hear. Auto parts chains are scarce here so I've been looking for an answer that named something locally available. Do you know the Lisle part number by any chance?

Anyone know if UAP/NAPA carries this tool?

    Thanks

About all they want to sell you at dealers here in Detroit, is models, hats, batteries for your key chains, or floor mats. And that's at list prices! GOPHERKILLER

I took all my bolts out with a pair of vise grips. I then put in regular hex head bolts. All I need now to take the top off is a 1/2 inch socket.

I sure don't know the Lisle number - But NAPA should have it too. I'll look in my Lisle catalog today and get back with you on that.
