Happened to be checking out one of my favorite reference materials(about limited slip, posi, you know : ) and ran across the gov-lock (eaton positive locking differential) section. Never seen this in print anywhere else, but you are NOT supposed to run limited slip diff additive in the gov lock. Same goes for the (3/4ton?) Gov-Lock.

It lists 5 different types of "limited slip diffs" installed in trucks. the one that I thought was Auburn (cone clutches) is atually a Borg Warner unit, and one LS diff is Eaton, one Chevy, and one a "power-lok" whoever makes that.

Just thought I'd pass that info on! : )

I think the "Power-Lok" was made by Spicer.

My shop manual agrees that no addative is needed in the Gov-Lok. I've been running GL-5 in a 3/4 ton Gov-Lok for 160,000 miles with no problems.

Are you saying that the GM service manual is wrong? Not that it hasn't happened before (1985 Monte Carlo SS's didn't get 800CFM Q-jets for example) But with something like 5 or 6 different axles listed for the the trucks, made by at least two different manufacturers, you don't think the number of "Posi Units" used could equal that? Or you think that GM is wrong with the additive?

At least I learned something from that manual...didn't realize the gov-lock (is supposed) to unlock at over approx. 20MPH. Max tire speed differential at low speeds before it "locks" is 100RPM.

    Hey Dorian,
I used to have a 2wd 88 GMC shortbox and it had 3.42's and the Gov-lock. If I wanted to roast em up the truck would start out all sideways [IMG] and all of a sudden it would revert to one wheel peel. So I guess the Gov-lock in that truck was working correctly...[IMG]
