Hi all - I've been gone for 3 months, and return to find my Jimmy's systems gradually craping out on me. I'm hoping that it's due to something small and that they're all related. First, while still gone, the wife tells me that my brake pedal has started exhausting air when pressed. And the idle is now high and won't kick down, causing the engine to 'diesel' when shut off. And now that I'm back, I drove it around a bit, and the power steering suddenly quit on me. It worked fine when I parked to run into the store, but after re-starting and trying to leave, it suddenly has no power assist. The belt is still intact - haven't checked the fluid level yet. Could all these problem be related to each other by maybe a vacuum leak or something? Ideas/suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

It doesn't sound related to me. Did you ask your wife just how much fun she had when you were gone? You might try bleeding your brakes. It sounds like you have air in the lines. You will also want to check for leaks in the lines. Maybe your fast idle cam on your carb needs some WD-40 on it. Not sure about that. Last, but not least, you will want to check the fluid in your power steering. Your pump prolly went out.

The fast idle and the hissing when pressing the brake are related. Your brake booster is failing. That's the big round thing behind the master cylinder. It operates on Vacume and it has failed and created a vacume leak. Can't blame that on the wife....that's just age.
The Power steering is it's own seperate issue. Check your fluid first.

Checked the power steering fluid and it's fine. Just can't see how the pump could go bad suddenly without warning. No noises, etc. I'm persueing the booster as the cause of the high idle.

Take the Vac line off the booster and stick your thumb over it and if it starts idling right you know for sure it's the booster.\
That's weird about the power steering. They do usualy give some warning in the form of a whine or jerking when turning. Got me on that one. I would almost be inclined to think that's the valves in the box stuck and not a pump problem. Not sure how to diagnose that. Tried percusive maintance yet? (you know, smack the box with a hammer and see if it frees up the valve)
