A friend of mine has an 88 with the np208 transfer case. He says that when he puts it in 4x4 it makes a grinding noise that he thinks is coming from the transfer case. I haven't heard it myself yet, but can anybody give me some idea's where to start. I don't know much about these cases.

Check the ATF level in the case and check that nothing is making contact with the front driveshaft. Those are easy (cheap). If the grinding can be "felt" in the shift lever, the case probably needs professional help (expensive).
