I installed it on my new computer and it worked fine at first. Installed some other games and went to play GTA3 and it won't run at all. I think it is a Direct X issue, I have 9.0a and GTA3 likes 8.1. But how do I make this work without screwing up the computer/other games? Any ideas?

I am not even sure how to go about installing an older version of Direct X, I know I can get it on oldversion.com, but not what to do with it from there. TIA

    Re: Gamers/Computer Guru\'s, GTA3 stopped working :(

GTA works fine undre directx9.0a and 9.0b.

QUestion - do other directx games work fine? What about opengl games?

If both work fine, I would say you need to uninstall and reinstall GTA. You can keep your save game files.

If directX games are not playing but openGL games are, you need to run dxdiag.exe. If you have a problem, reinstall directx. You do not need to uninstall to reinstall directx.

If no games at all are working, I would recommend uninstalling your video card drivers and then reinstalling.

TO reiterate, I am pretty sure your GTA executive just got hashed - it happens. Uninstall the game and reinstall.

    Have fun.

    reinstall gta

if the menu doesnt load or anything...then its the program

if you get to the menu, try to load a game then it craps...its graphics.

id try reinstalling it, or downloading a nocd EXE for it...just to replace that file one way or another.

Do you run any mods on that game?
Some times if you run mods it wont load correctly.
Also...if you save your game with cheats running, then try to load it without the cheats running (like a trainer) it doesnt want to work right.

and lastly...try updating the game to the latest version...if there is one out there.

    Re: Gamers/Computer Guru\'s, GTA3 stopped working :(

To answer both replies, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game itself. As far as I can get is the Rockstar games logo popping up, and thats it. This is my new computer so almost everything is up-to-date, and I DL all the windows updates etc.

I didn't play it for a long time, but I installed Sim City 4 and after that is when it stopped working. I am not a huge gamer, but I have Red Faction, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Sim City 4, and Hoyle Casino, and they all still work /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I have run dxdiag and everything seems to be ok. I have an ATI Radeon 9800 video card, haven't checked to see if there are newer drivers available, its just weird that it worked, and now it doesn't /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The newest approved drivers are is Catalyst 3.9.
I would try a reinstall of those.

I have a 9800 pro (128 not the 256) and I run gta and gta vc with no problems, dx9.0b.

Let us know what you eventually do to get it running.

    Ok, /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

Installed Directx 9.0b, Catalyst 3.9, uninstalled the game, reinstalled a few times, went to the support site through Rockstar Games and have tried most of their "fixes" (still trying them) but still nothing /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

You ever want to just play a game and something like this happens? Just 5 minutes, 5 measily minutes and the computer has to be a POS, /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I really don't know what to try next, it worked when the computer was brand new, 2 months ago, now nothing. Can codecs effect games in some ways, those are the only other things I have installed since the last time it worked, don't see why they would but I dunno anymore.

What sound card do you run? How old are the drivers? Sound cards can cause alot of problems if not updated. Not saying thats the problem, buts it's something else to check. /forums/images/graemlins/pimp1.gif

    Re: Gamers/Computer Guru\'s, GTA3 stopped working :(

Sound Card is a Sound Blaster Audigy, I started looking for a newer driver for this as well, but the Sound Blaster site confuses me /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif ... seriously though, I have to figure out which one I have exactly, they list a lot of different Sound Blaster Audigy variations and since it came with the computer I have to look up and see the exact model I have. That is the only thing I haven't updated though, just seems screwy to me that everything else(other games) works.

And all I wanted to do was some random killing/car jacking/robbing of people /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

This is perplexing - directx is functioning fine, as you said you ran dxdiag and it passed all tests.
You have reinstalled the game, so the executive is OK.
I'd hate to reinstall windows just because a game isn't working well, but that may be your last resort.

In dxdiag, there is a place to check directsound. If it passes that, then your sound card drivers should be aok.

    ****UPDATE****

It's been a few months and I about gave up the damn game...but then I had an idea, try playying the game from a different user in WIN XP. I went into my guest account and the game worked /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

After a little thinking the only thing I could determine that was different in the guest account is the saved game files...so I went back into my regular log in (admin) and deleted the saved game folder and just like that I was back in business, minus my saved games though /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Overall the whole thing was weird. None of the help suggestions online at any of the GTAIII sites were close to this or recommended this as a fix. And when you uninstall and reinstall the game the saved games are not affected so the problem remained when trying that option.

Oh well, just wanna say thanks to those who offered help and also let other people know my fix in case they are having similar problems. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
