Who has an amateur radio (Ham) license? I got the testing material and I'll be ready for my Technician Class exam in a few weeks. After that, I'll need a good radio (probably go 2m). I know ICOM and Midland make some nice radios. I want a handheld. Any recommendations?

If you get one of the "test" programs for your computer they have every question you'll see on the test on them. Makes it easy to take the writen test. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I already have the test material. Bought a book and CD-ROM test program from the W5YI Group (Larry Pollock - NB5X). The book is very straight forward and has all the questions from the updated question pool (updated 01 July 2003). Also downloaded a shareware morse code trainer. It too is pretty simple to load and appeares to be very straight forward. Now - to start cracking the books and get that license!

Well, it depends on location and what band you operate on.
If you dont know anything about ham radio and make up a callsign and start talking, chances are your going to be able to talk to some folks. However, many operators, with the help of the computer and internet, can input the call into the database and pull all information on it. If it doesnt show in the database, you just got busted operating with a fake call and most will stop talking to you immediately or try and get more information about you to turn into the FCC's enforcement bureau. If you 'bootleg" an actual call and get caught, the same thing will probably happen. Amateur radio is still a self-policing hobby.

Ever heard of a rabbit hunt? It's what hams do for fun and profit. They will talk to you all you want and act like everything is OK. Meanwhile they are triangulating your position and will hunt you down. You will then be turned in to the FCC and fined up to $20,000. Some of this money goes towards repeaters and satalites for ham use.

    Something to think about. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

I have never heard of that before but I have participated in a few hunts for practice (licensed hams as both hunter and hunted). Very fun to try and track down a mobile operator but they usually get caught /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Its known as T-Hunting...also known as Fox Hunting in the earlier days.

None of the money collected goes to the Amateur community, especially repeaters or satellite. Thats all private funding or donations.

[/ QUOTE ] Well, with over 1,000.00 vechiles in there, it was the perfect hidding spot. No fence on the back side (can be seen from the interstate) so having 4wd came in handy. And yes, sure did get sidetracked.
