Using some of the well-defined bullets utilized by my travel agency, I'm here to give y'all my opinion of Hawthorne, NV. Hopefully this will enable the future travler to make a decision on rather to drive thru or bypass some of these lesser known places.

-Don't sack up to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

-McDonald's is the only fast food place in town and they suck ass.

-The El Capitan Casino charges $2.50 a beer. But beware, this is the first bar I've been to that gave me a Miller when I asked for a Miller. I was wanting MGD.........Didn't know they still made Miller.

-Don't sack up to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

-Stay clear of the Hawthorne Civic Action team. They are Grade A asshats of the highest degree.

-The El Capitan charges a $10 deposit for the phone.

-For the single guys, if the ladies hanging out in the El Capitan last night listening and dancing to the '70's cover band are any indication of the Beaver Oil in town; stay away [IMG]
Didn't know Old Maids' Clubs had standards........

-And last but not least, don't sack up to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

So utilizing these observations/experience (yeah, I know y'all want the story /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) I've offered up a grade of "STAY THE [I love Jeeps] AWAY" for the lovely, quaint municipality of Hawthorne, NV.

Well, it's kind of a long story, but I know you want to know after hearing me say something about it..........

About an hour after I got to town on Saturday, some lady came into the parking lot of the El Capitan screaming about calling the cops. I'm /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif. I was thinking Hawthorne, NV, what happen, someone jaywalk? I.E. The Hawthorne Civic Action Commitee.

Well one of the staff members apparently rolled through a couple of stop signs. Her and her husband saw this. Well I guess they don't like city folk cause she was ranting and raving about city folk coming down there raising hell.

As they were walking off to call the law, I decided I might as well work my charm since I'm good at talking to people. After about ten seconds of trying to talk to them and the husband acting like a complete horse's ass, I gave up. I don't need that crap on my off time.

About 15 minutes later, the law shows up. But they are down the street. Big whoopie, right? I'm manning the tech both so the tech guy can eat.

About 15 minutes after the cops (2 deputies, 1 NHP) meet up down the street, the trooper comes through the alley, then pulls up behind me and motions me over.

He starts asking questions, who's the driver, who's the owner, where's the driver? I didn't have a clue where the guy was and didn't know his name, just knew the truck belongs to the race promoter.

He then asks me if I saw them pull up. They were half a block away. He then asks if I knew why they were there. Of course, I ain't stoopid /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif. Okay, I'm answering all his questions, but he appeared to be pissed that I didn't know where the driver was. I also told him I attempted to calm down the Action Committee so they wouldn't have to come out there.

Well he goes off on me. And I'm not talking about talking to me in a level, yet stern voice. I mean he is almost yelling. About what you ask. About me not walking down the street to contact them since I knew what was going on. All righty then. Most cops I know actually get out of the car. I honestly didn't expect more than them checking the area and driving off.

Well I didn't really take too kindly to this type of behavior and start to exchange words, then my better sense (a rare occassion /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif) stopped me. I got his name off his name plate and asked for a card and his supervisor's name and number. It's all cool, right? Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!

He very calmly tells me that he can easily supply me with the information I requested so I can file my complaint and he then says he can as easily cite me for delaying since I didn't take the walk down the street to talk them /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif/forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

So I very quickly drank my cup of shut the hell up cause I'm trying to get hired with an agency right now and figured I might not win when it came time to explain that one to them.

So after a few minutes, he asks me for ID and takes my info, then I ask him if I could speak privately with him. I started to talk, he almost continued with the attitude, but my charm worked on him. 'Splained my situation and we ended up BS'ing and he 'splained to me about the real issues. Unfortunately, the Civic Action Committee forced the deputy to cite the staff member, even after the deputy spent an hour trying to talk them out of it.

Then there was the traffic enforcement at the race. A trooper was sitting in a 25 zone and citing each and everyone he caught speeding. Needless to say, the NHP didn't endear themselves to the racers this weekend.

I lived there for 6 years and I have to agree on all accounts. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

No, Mickey-D's when I lived there. I had to suffer through the "Burger-Hut" and "Jolly Kone" for fast semi-food. I am sure the stuff served there was not suitable for human consumption. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

My grandfather's cousin's wife (follow that? /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif) was at one time 1/2 owner of the El Cap. She was a tight wad gouger if there ever is was one. Sounds like things have not changed. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

If you have to visit Mount Grant General Hospital (maybe after eating McDonalds /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif) say hello to my Aunt Lenora. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

My father was born and raised there, he got the heck out as soon as he could. That has to tell you something. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

There is lots I could tell you about that old town, most of it is pretty frikken boring....like the town itself. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

For some reason I've never been to Hawthorne. Now I'm glad I never took the trek. Tonopah was nice but a little boring. Spent time there when I worked for a casino for a few months. Almost died of boredom and left.

We will have a small casino, restaraunt and bar with entertainment at our place along with a cottage type motel. The reason for the runway is to attract the High Rollers. We will be catering to them. We will also be having scenic 4wd tours in the mountains and a camp ground for RVs. Not to mention the Bordello... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif The food will be Top Notch along with the service. Should be a huge success! Being only 40 miles from Mammoth and 48 miles from Bishop, I think it will work.

I know about the NV state police. I never mess with them and they will get percs at our place... /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Surprised the hell out of me since the last time I had an encounter with NHP, I was doing about 80mph down 95 and he was running the other way and just signalled me to slow down, visual warnings are great........ /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Spent a week in Hawthorne one afternoon. I'm crawling down the grade in the back way to Hawthorne from Fletcher Springs when low and behold the phenolic piston on my Bronco I had at the time disintegrates. Pedal goes to the floor and pretty much all the brake fluid leaves a trail down the mountain side until it is gone. I crawl down in 4low and make it to the highway into Hawthorne. Low and behold they have a Ford dealership/shop there. Amazingly, they have a metal piston in stock, as well as new rotors. Better yet, for a good price, they rebuild the caliper and put on a new rotor and I'm on the road. However, in the meantime, my wheeling buddy has come down with a major case of food poisoning ( I swear it wasn't my cooking) and we are now en route to the urgent care center/hospital. After getting poked, prodded, and filled with untold amounts of unk. drugs, we are back on the road.

We decide to go out to the ammo dumps and drive around. That was interesting for a while and then we head out to Walker Lake. I'd never heard of it but we did some great wheeling out on the dunes. We decide to take a shortcut north out of the area and end up on the indian reservation. That story will wait until the statute of limitations runs out to be told. The only other thing I remember about Hawthorne is the anti-aircraft gun in the park where we ate lunch.... Oh, we did get stopped by a Sheriff's unit. I told him I noticed a distinct lack of bums and problem children hanging about the joint. He told me, with a completely straight face, that there are a lot of deep mineshafts in Nevada....

BLM was jerks to the race promoter. He spent about a year going through their hoops to get the course opened up. It was just east of Walker Lake. If the dunes are the one that was pointed out, they are closed.

That would be Lady Bird Park. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif I played "Pearl Harbor" many times on that gun as a kid. Some of the controls even work to raise and lower the gun barrels. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

If I recall correctly, it was right on the main drag on the north end of town. I think the controls still did work. I was busy eating some mystery meat fast food product at the time and laughing at my buddy who was changing back and forth between pale white and pale green....

The dunes were right on the lake shore. We probably weren't supposed to be there, but nobody bothered us. Coulda been all the noisy lead we were sending all over the place.... /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

17-18 years ago when I lived there, you could get to the dunes via a road, but all the land surrounding the road was fenced off. Something about unexploded ordinance.... /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif
