I bought a 3/4 ton rear axle Saturday, 14 ff... The guy was tryin to sell me the matching front... he says its a 44 but the hubs are WAY bigger than anyy 44.

At the end of the axle tube it bells out. It doesn't just but up to the ball joint purches like my 44. He said something about there being 2 44's???
One housing fits a set of gear ratios and one fits another set...
    Any ideas???

It sounds to me like a closed knuckle design D44. Those were the early D44's and not too desirable.

the axle is in a 3/4 ton 72.

he showed it to me cus I was buying a low geaared 14 bolt. I was asking him about the 3/4 ton front conversion parts.

I think I'm going to pass on the front and concentrate on building the back one badass... Ive seen all the 3/4 ton conversion stuff on here real cheap.. compared to buying the whole axle..

    he wants 450 for it...

Any reason I couldn't put 4.56 gears in my current tube thats got 3.73's?

I'm not sure I read it right, but did the 14 bolt come out of the '72 as well? 1973 was the first year for the 14 bolt, so if it did, it had to be swapped in. Also, I believe that the closed knuckle D44s were last used in chevy trucks in 1970. So a 72 should have a regular 44 front. But what you originially described does sond like a closed knuckle 44.

OUCH!! $450 for an Eaton is getting ripped off. I keep triping over them up here for under $100 and sold my last one with a detroit locker for $125 to a CJ8 owner who now had desided to go with a Corp 14 w/ eaton instead. If anyone is interested in a cheap eaton with detroit PM me and I will pass on his email address (he is located in Vancouver, WA).

    agreed!

A 14 ff with 4.56 gears I'd pay the 450 and dance my a$$ away with it... but a 14 ff that is all locked up with crap in the brakes no know gear ratio and an open diff... naaa I think there going to have to sweeten the pot or Im putting a stop on the check today...
