    Help I\'m Stuck - Electrical - FIXED!

All of a suddenly the thing won't start. The lights work but nothing else. I can not get power through the ignition switch. I have power all the way to the alternator but not from the alternator - there is no power from the big brass power bolt exiting the alternator. However, I would not think that would stop the radio, rear window or even the ignition switch from allowing me to click it forward to make the starter turn. Any ideas?????? I need to go out tonight but can't budge

Something similar happened to my 88 TBI truck... I think it ended up being a blown fusable link somewhere under the access panel on the passenger side. I used a new stretch of wire, and replaced the entire old segment. I wish I could remember which wire it was....

I'll see if I can't remember that info for you and write back later... hmmm....

All the fusible links near the firewall are fine - I get power to the firewall and the fusible link for the battery is fine. The lights and the horn work but nothing else. The rear window will not even roll up or down using the exterior key. That window, from what I thought was attached directly to the car electronics. Is there fusible links attached to the starter??????? I hope not, with my headders and the heat shield, it will be a bitch getting to it. Help Pleaseeeeeee!

<font color=blue>So everything works except the starter? Is there a noise when you turn the key to the start position? If not, check the wire coming out of the ign switch when the key is in the start position

Is the ignition switch turning far enough? When the lock cylinder fails, it can do all sorts of strange stuff. I had one fail such that the accessories would come on, but it wouldn't turn quite far enough to engage the starter. Another worked fine in the start/run direction, but you couldn't switch it to the acc position. Replacing the lock cylinder fixed each problem. $18 for the part at Pep Boys and about 20 minutes to yank the steering wheel and replace the cylinder. [IMG]

NOTHING WORKS except for the horn and lights. Power is comming through the starter to the alternator but NOT from the alternator. The rear window, which works separate from the rest of the truck, does not work, even with the key switch on the outside. I am not looking for fusible links from the starter to see if something there is bad.

Sounds like a blown fusable link at the starter. My '84 has links down at the starter, but I dunno if yours does.

I had the same issue with my Camaro. Everything shut down except for the horn and lights; but this happened to me while I was driving 80 mph! Anyway, it ended up being the fusable link down at the starter.

    Good luck,

    Thomas.

Re: Help I\'m Stuck - Electrical - Fixed

OK, I got it. When I installed the new engine, I naturally put in a new starter with a heat shield. I had gotten sick of installing new starters every two years, or so, and having to manipulate my hand into the engine area to hook up those pesty wires to the starter. To solve this, I created a detachable link on the firewall so I can install the wires while the starter is out of the truck then install the starter and simply hook up the wires on the fire wall. One of my connections became loose. I soldered it on this time and the thing started right up. Thanks for the advice from everyone and especially thanks for your fast responses!!!!!!
