My brothers 94 z71 is loosing tranny fluid and he said there is some fluid on top of the air cleaner so I thought it might be overheating and coming out the dipstick tube but it has one of those locking dipsticks and he just drives no towing. it has 165,000 miles on the original radiator so I was thinking it might be bad causing it to overheat but the engine runs cool. any ideas??

I don't know if this would happen with a locking dipstick, but it may be that the tranny breather tube is plugged.

if the breather is plugged it could cause it to push fluid out of the dipstick, a plugged transmission cooler or restricted cooler line can cause the same problem
