The little woman told me I can get a CB for Valentines - kinda spooks me because now I know she expects something.... LOL

So - please help me pick one out, brands and models please.
I have been using the Cobra handheld units so I am not very familiar with the good stuff.

Also do any of you know CB shops in the Bay Area that you would send business to?

I will be looking for the entire setup - CB, Antenna, cable, etc....

    Thanks,

    Dave

Dave, you can't go wrong with a Cobra 29. They are an excellent radio and accept modifications very well. A new one should run about $125.00. For a perfect sound, have a CB shop "peak & tune" the radio. Add a noise cancelling mike, and you are set. For an antenna, I like the Wilson products. Their "Silver Load" line of antennas are a fiberglass whip. You can get them in different lengths, depending on your preference, but I use the 4' models. All thats left is some quality coax for the antenna and you are done. Hope this helps. Mike.

    Yes that helps - thanks!

What about CBs that can get weather reports- are they worth it?

I like the Texas Ranger line of CB's. I have the TR966. Cost about $180 peaked and tuned, and all that good stuff... Can be modified for extra channels (not legal) and things like that. [IMG] Dual final pills (transistors too) (also illegal)...

It has SSB. You get better range on SSB but other units you talk to on SSB also have to have SSB and be on the right sideband (upper or lower)...

Antennas I recommend a magnet mount Wilson 1000 or 5000. [IMG]

    Just my opinions...

Thanks. I was considering the SSB units. It seems that everyone here is recommending them.

What about the weather station features? Anyone use them? Sometimes I am in the 4x4 all weekend with no outside contact and figured this would be a good idea.

I've never used weather radio... Just check reports before I leave and rely on the radio for other stuff...

Might want to get a seperate battery powered weather radio they're not too expensive and you can take it with you if you wander out of the truck, etc...

The cb's with weatherbands are good to have, but that doesn't mean they will p/u a weather report in the area you are wheeling. In other words the weather repeater has to be near by for your Cb to p/u the report. Just dont expect your Cb to p/u a weather report because there really is no telling if it will or not.

The 29 is a good radio but if your thinking about getting one with SSB I would think about getting Chevyracing 148 GTL It has the SSB And is a Very good radio you could had the extra Channel's to it and some toys as well.

dave, I would get a uniden grant xl. I have used mine for 5-6 years now in several rigs and have never had a problem. it is a very user friendly unit and can be modified very easily for options.

I highly second the Grant from Uniden. I have the Grant LT and think its just hot $hit. I would not be to gun ho for Cobra unless it was an old one. Uniden used to make their stuff and they got into some dispute and parted company. Uniden now makes the good stuff under there own name.
