I need some names of some good places to get a crate motor for my Burben. I just had the old one torn down and the heads are junk and block is 30 over! So I'm going to go with a crate. Where, besides the dealer, can I get a good crate motor? TIA

Try jimpaceparts.com or something like that. I have heard they have the best prices around and it is cheaper to get it shipped from them than buying from your local dealer.

I was reccomemded to Nationwide-engines.com, Goautocenter.com and Speedomotive.com. I think the best one was goautocenter.com they have a larger varity and decent prices, I am probably going to get on from them for my 85.

Just a thought... is something I'm kicking around for my engine swap down the road. Nationwide has a 4 bolt 350 shortblcok all put together and warranty for $600... could add Vortech heads and have a really nice motor for street and med. wheeling... although if you want to get nasty... could look into speed's 383 stroker shortblock... $1200... Just my $.02 for what's it's worth... tough to call without a budget and type of use detirmined. I lean away from GM crate motors... not always what they are cracked up to be and can be expensive.

Get pace to give you a estimate and then hit your local dealer and see if they will meet it. Most dealers quote about $400 higher than Pace. I'll tell you if your looking for a stock replacement engine your not going to go wrong with a REAL GM crate. I dropped one in my wifes 79 and it runs great! I had a timming issue (miss matched timming cover and ballancer) When I went to fire the truck is was way retarded. The motor is so well balanced it actully fired and would idle retarted about 30deg at about 300rpm.
Most crates come without the Harmonic ballancer. They have the newer style timming chain cover on them that has the timming pointer right of the older style engine. Make sure you get the right balancer with the timming mark that matches the cover. I got my hands on the wrong one and it took me about 2 hours to figure out what had happend.

Check out www.asrengines.com (stands for Auto Shop Racing). They have alot of 383 Stroker crate engines and the guys answered my email promptly. I think they are in TX.
