You can also use one off a 2wd truck that has a 465.

I have the original bellhousing from my 72. I picked up a hydraulic housing for mine. Someone give me an idea of what its worth, and its up for grabs.

regarding the starter on the early trucks. Did it mount on the bellhousing or on the engine block. I've seen both types. any clues???

the one i had did have the mount for the starter on the bellhousing, it was cracked so i threw it away a while ago.

I just thought of another complication for you... What side is the starter on for the Caddy 500? I think the Pontiac 455 is on the drivers side rather than pass side like the SBC but not sure about a Caddy motor.

Be sure to check the diameter of the big round hole that the spline goes thru. There are 2 different sizes. The one that was on my '71 Jimmy had an opening of about 5.5" but the one off my '68 C/10 pickup had a diameter of only 4.5." [Sizes are approx guesses.] Not sure if this is a 4x4 vs 4x2 thing, a later model thing, a V8 vs L6 thing or even a Chevy vs GMC thing. But before you buy one, make sure you have the same internal diameter since they are different.

3 speeds and SM420s used the smaller pilot diameter. SM465s used the bigger pilot diameter. Otherwise these bell housings do look almost identical.

My truck used to have a 3-spd in it and I swapped over to a SM465 without changing the bellhousing.

Don't know how I got hold of a bellhousing for a saginaw. Must've been the old junkyard switcheroo. I even painted it engine orange for the '71 K/5 build-up, back in '99, only to find it was too small. A machinist offered to bore it open for me, but it was easier to degrease and paint the [bigger] one that came off the truck. It would be funny if one of these trannies was a 420, but the reverse is hard right and down.

The '72 I had the starter bolted to the bellhousing.
