<font color=blue>My new 89 has some 4x10s in the rear of the side panels. What are some good upgrade speakers to put back there? Would I have to modify the wires to plug into these speakers?

If you want to do a direct replacement, Pioneer meakes a good 4x10, 2 or 3 way I believe. I have pioneer 2 ways in the back of my 86, i like them. A bigger upgrade would be a 6x9, this may require additional trimming of the mounting area, but it should all wire up the same.

I have those 2-way 4x10 Pioneers sitting in my garage right now. I got rid of the box they came in, but the speakers are still brand new. They were $100 at Best Buy when I got them. $50 and they're yours.

id just discontect the 4x10s and put some 6x9s in boxes or in the back seat side panels . the farther away from round a speaker is the worse the sound quality gets. 6x9 is closer to round than a 4x10. plus rears are just for fill anyway.

he who bash other 4x4, look silly when being pulled out by it.

Actually if you trim up the panels a bit 6x9's go in there nicely and sound decent. if you put some batting in the hole just a little, it will geta richer deeper bass. Actually there is a GM plug attached to it. You can make little adapter to plug into standard spade terminals if you want to keep the factory plugs. but if you really want some nice Bass fill put 8" woofers in there. requires alot of cutting but it sounds nice when done
