I am having trouble getting my truck to start. The engine is a 350 with a rebuilt Q-jet. When I turn the engine over, all it does is blow little bursts of brown/black smoke out of the tailpipe. I can get it started if I hold the gas pedal down to the floor for a little bit, but after it does start it does not stay cranked. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Does it smell like it's getting gas?
If so, it sounds to me like poor ignition.
Pull the dist. cap and check the cap and rotor for scale etc.
Clean all terminals and the tip of the rotor if needed.
    This is a starting point..............good luck[IMG]

It sounds like the choke might be stuck shut. Open the choke up and try to start it. If it starts, then the choke needs to be adjusted or repaired. Let us know if this doesn't work and we'll suggest something else to try.

Clean the dist points like above...
And you might spray a little starting fluid down the carb and see if it kicks over any better...
