    Here\'s Your Sign!!

I had a stupid people encounter today. I was walking out of best buy when someone asked if I could jump them. Since he had his jumper cables with him I said I would. Anyway, I pop my hood and connect the cables to the battery, then he does the same, but as soon as he does sparks start flying everywhere (can ya'll see where this is going??). Anyway, I told him to make sure he isn't crossing - to + and vise versa. He said "I think I know what I'm doing". So I let Mr. Know it all do it his way, well he gets in and tries to start it and nothing happens (I wonder why).... All the sudden the cable starts smoking and it litteraly melts before our eyes. He jumps out and said "You connected it wrong". I grabbed a rag and pulled the jumper cables off and showed him where he was the one who connected them wrong. He started arguing with me and said no you switched them. So I got pissed, let him use my cell phone and left. Some people are just stupid as all and when you try and help them they aren't even gratefull !!!! Oh well....least we both know I was right.

I just have NO tolerance for morons like that guy. I'da probably clamped those cables somewhere that might have got the cops involved..especially if he took a chance on smoking my alternator.

Everything seems to be fine, and I know I shouldn't have let him use my cell phone, but I did want to make sure he wouldn't be stranded. I guess I'm just like that.

So it could smoke my stuff even if my side was connected right?

    Hey Scott,

Glad you were big enough to realize even thought that guy was an [censored] ... you didn't leave him stranded. Wouldn't have taught him a thing if you just drove off. Maybe he'll get something out of the second nice attempt.

    Hope your trucks OK.

Yes, it can smoke your stuff. He basically created a dead short across your electrical system. It takes a lot of current to melt jumper cables. Guess what supplied that current? Your truck! His battery was dead so yours was the one donating energy to the short. [IMG]

One time I accidently welded a spot on my front bumper with my battery cables. Didn't notice any effects.

Usually any severe damage will show up right away. The alternator is the most likely part to have a problem. Check that your voltage stays up with the high beams on, fan on high, wipers running. If not, then one or more of the diodes in the alternator may be fried. [IMG] If it stays up with that load, then it's probably OK.

Good learning experience for us all. I almost had an identical story recently............a nice guy outside a Schucks auto parts store with his 5 year old son needed a jump for his diesel FURD..............he didn't speak hardly any English but I knew what he needed...............so got out my cables, he grabs one end and starts to hook em up......wrong.........I politely told him (in Spanish, since I speak it and is his native language) to sit in the truck..............hooked him up and started right up. I disconnected him and wished him Feliz Navidad, then explained black is for negative in the future. Hope he learned from it..........I did. Always do the hookups yourself.

    Re: Here\'s Your Sign!!

Word of advice ..... someone wants you to jump thier '97 or newer vehicle ....... DONT ...... Jumping a vehicle causes voltage spikes that the newer computers cant handle. Had a customer come in the other day with his vehicle on the hook complaining nothing would work on his vehicle. He stated that the battery had gone dead and he tried to get a jump and that when everything shut off. I showed him in his owners manuel where it says not to jump the vehicle and he gets mad and says he is gonna sue the guy who helped him!!!!! I politely hollered at the wrecker driver to back up and tow his vehicle to another shop. I dont need idiots for customers .......

i think its is possible to jump the newer cars/trucks as long as there is an inline fuse installed in the vehicle being jumped.

Believe me, from now on I will do all the connecting. If they don't want to let me I guess they can wait on someone else to jump them.

Maybe I'm being an a$$, but I generally wont jump start someone unless I know them. Of course, I'll go out of my way to help a fellow K5'er if I can.

Some people just have absolutely ZERO respect. I'll jump start anyone that asks, but only on ONE condition...I connect everything cause I'm sure as hell not going to let them fry my system.

He actually asked it you had insurance???
Thats like saying "As soon as you pull me out, I'm holding you responsible for all damages including scratches and so forth".

In my younger years I'd help any one that needed it! Then I fried a alternator one time and stoped giving jumps to any one but friends, My wife called me one day to see if she could jump start a coe worker! I asked her not too! that night I lost the jumper cabel out of her van.

Now days every ones just to happy to sue ypu for helping them. I hate to say it but I drive by most stuck cars and all stuck SUV (I hate that word)

I understand the jeep thing I drive a BLAZER!!
