Re: Hey Sandman...step in here please

Ah yes. I have done this. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I didnt take any pics as I was burning midnight oil trying to get it done but I did do it.

This is how I did it:

    - Pulled off the rear bumper.
    - Pulled off the hose to the filler neck.
    - Put a floor jack under the tank and removed the 4 bolts and then pulled out the straps.
    - Lowered the tank an inch or so, so I could get to the hose connections easier. Undid the hoses and the wires.
    - Dropped the tank.

Now the trick is to raise up the crossmembers. But first you have to remove them from the frame. Now this is a real bitch to do and was the hardest part of the whole thing. I dont have a torch so I rented one for $15 and blew out all of the rivits that hold in the crossmembers.

I was planning on cutting out squares of 3" and welding them in. I decided not to in case I ever wanted to remove the body lift for any reason so I decided to use spacers with new long bolts to space up the crossmembers. I found a peice of thick wall pipe at work and cut 14 pieces at 3" long. Got 14 bolts and nuts and stuff and spaced everything up. I was worried about the spacers allowing the tank to shift around but the Crossmember mounting points are staggered forward and back. Then the tank is sorta jammed up higher in the frame so I dont think its going anywhere. Anyway, It worked out well and I went through week in Moab with no trouble. Anybody who watched me go through Upper HellDorado knows that I didnt baby it.

If your interested, I'll get some pics together or let me know if you have any more questions and I'll do my best to answer them. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh yeah, The gas tank seam had to be wiggeled some to get up in the frame rails but it fit fine.

I was gonna swap in a blazer tank into my pickup to eliminate the smashed up, leaky saddlebag tanks. I should be able to raise it in the frame the same as you did, right? Also, which has more capacity,Sub or Blazer tank, or are they the same?
    Thanx

You could get bigger tanks in the Subs. I think that they are longer is all.

I think the biggest problem you will have is drilling the holes in the top of the frame. Cant get a drill in there strait. Might have to pull the bed or just do some welding.

Re: Hey Sandman...step in here please

I was gonna do it when I swap the bed, the one I have has holes big enogh for small children to fit through in the floor.
It will also make getting the saddlebag tanks off MUCH easier.
    Thanx for the info!

Without the bed, raising up the tank should be a snap! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
