I have a 14 bolt rear and Dana 44 front with 4.10 gears for sale. A guy called about them, saying he had 4.56 gears in his '77, and wanted 4.10's. We talked and were thinking about trading.

How common were factory 4.56 gears in a 14 bolt and Dana 44? It's a '77 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 4spd/205 (thats all I know about his truck so far).

They were available in civilian trucks, I have a friend that had an 83 K30 dually that came with factory 4.56's. Overall though I'd have to say they are very rare.

I can't tell you percentage-wise the 4.56's came out in the K20's, but they were in higher percentages in the K30's than K20's.

I did get a bone stock D44 once from a guy here in town for $10 and it had bone stock 4.56 gears in it. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif It was missing everything from the backing plates on out. It was an original 4.56 axle since the tab was still bolted to the cover and 4WPW decoded the BOM stamped on the tube.

I have a Dana 44 with factory 4.56 gears in it now, but its a closed knuckle 44 out of a '69. I havent run across an open knuckle one yet with 4.56's. Initially, I thought he might just have 4.10's and thought they were 4.56's, but he seemed sure they were 4.56. I'll just have to see the truck I guess.
