Does anyone know how they are engaged or disengaged? Just curious.

(putting it simply since I've never torn one down to its componets)
Well when you put it in 4 wheel drive your driveshaft turns your axles. The force from the movement causes inside of the hubs to lock and drive the wheel. The disenage my turning off 4 wheel drive and the axles arent moving and you back up and they release. The problem is that they like to disengage and engage at will when they get old, leading to possibly severe damage. Manuals are less convenient but much more reliable.
