Its on a '72 truck. I assume the standard 0-90 Ohm GM type. I know you can test it with an ohmmeter, but how do you do it? Sometimes my guage works, but the needle sticks in one place a lot of the time. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

For the gauge, disconnect the brown wire that goes to the sending unit.
Leave the key on and look at yer gauge.
With it disconnected and the circuit is "open" your gas gauge should read all the way full.
When you touch the end of the wire to ground, the gauge should go all the way to empty.

There, you just eliminated your gauge. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Thanks, Ryan, I appreciate the help. I'll go check that and see if its my guage or not. I think my guage is functional and I think my sending unit works, I just think the float is physically getting stuck in one position until it finally gets jarred loose and then reads the corect level.

HMMMMMMM.....weird. i just asked a question about the sending unit on my 72 blazer. it seems to read exactly 1/2 of what it should read. we were messing with sending units all day today trying to figure it out. maybe a electrical genius will help both of us....lol

sorry i cant help you myself.

If it reads half then maybe you have a half tank of gas. Just a thought.
