Hesitation, low power, bad gas mileage..........It'll just run like crap overall, kinda' like a stuck choke without the gas smell!

I've heard they smell bad and the material inside begins to crumble, you may be able to hear it rattle around if you bang on with your hand. You may want to wait for a more technical answer, I'm sure someone will have one!

    Nate,

You are still alive! The cats that were put on our blazers suck. If you have the money, just get it replaced. Get a free flow, it will help with power. Call me in the morning. We buy ours from a company in Mesa. I think they are about $50.00.

If it's bad you'll have no power when you jump on it . It will sound like it's screaming but won't move very fast .

Well, just to update you guys... I went ahead and had a High flow Cat and megaflo muffler with 3" pipes and tip put in yesterday. The tail pipe and muffler has several holes in it and the Cat has 147,000 on it so I figured it was due to be changed. Looks real nice and sounds burly. Notice just alittle bit more low end torque and better acceleration so far. Just got to get use to the low rummble sound of the muffler. Set me back 320.00. The shop that did it were really good and did exactly what I asked them to do(time for the shackle flip). If any one is interested in the shop that did the work here in Phoenix, AZ just send me an e-mail. Thanks for all your input.

Anyone ever hear of water coming out of the tailpipe if the cat is bad? My buddy said this, but he isn't exactly a mechanic. I had to explain to him what differentials did. However, every now and then, I do get water coming out. I'm almost convinced it's condensation, but water out the tailpipe in 95 degree SoCal midday heat?

It's condinsation. I live in atlanta and plenty hot here and it happens on both my trucks all the time and I don't have cats on either of them. smack your friend around and tell him to quit smoking crack.
As for cats. little tip. Catco makes some of the best flowing cats. Autozone sells a generic Catco cat thats rated to 5.2 liters for $50 a piece. It is made out of the same material that is in the High flow but its just a smaller cat so not rated up to the 5.7 we need. If you run duals your only running 2.85 liters through it and well under half it's rated capacity. The single high flows usualy go for $150 in the size needed for our trucks.

Is it hard to cut that off and put a new pipe in that location?

not if you have a sawzall. actually my converter/y-pipe connection sat right on top of a crossmember....a little bit to the rear, I just took a grinder and ground the inlet of the cat...only through the cat exhaust pipe...not through to the second (y-pipe end) and hammered and pryed it off. At the time it was easier than using a hack saw. I did it at that point in the pipe because it looked like the only true 3" portion of the pipe. i put on a 3" to 3" adapter and my 10' section of 3" pipe...clamped it up and viola....done. had the tailpipe bent out to the side about a week later...right now in the process of finding something to use as a baffle at the tip.....to take a little bit of the edge off.
