19 or 30? Trying to help a friend get a power lock carrier for his 57 GMC 1/2 ton but not sure on the spline count.

I'd say about a 99% chance it is 19 spline, but I wouldn't buy parts without pulling a shaft to be sure.

I'd say it's an old "11" spline model.... (or was it 10.. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif).

For a long time I had a 67 Jeep that had a rear D44. I thought that the 19 spl. didn't appear in the Jeep until the middle sixties, and the earlier ones came with the (very weak) 10 or 11 "coarse" splined shafts. These were known for breaking right at the side gear in the diff.

I know GMC was running 30 spline in 1961 and 63 as I have parted out a couple of those axles... I guess you could replace the side gear for the axle shaft with a 19 spline unit but I will have to see if they are available...
