How many VIN plates on a \'78?

Stephen put this idea in my head in another thread. I thought of it a while back, I don't know why it left my head... Anyways, if I could find the title and VIN plates from a 73 or 74 pickup then I would not have to smog my truck anymore. I'm wondering how legal this is first of all, but more importantly - How many places is the VIN on the cab of a '78? I know that it's in the door and on the dash, but are there any other plates that are hidden? Seems like it would be a pretty easy job, I just need to find some rivets that look factory then remove the windshield to replace the plate on the dash. It needs a new seal anyways so that's not a huge deal...

    Just one place...the door jam...
79' is the first year for the dash VIN.

    LEGAL....LOL...NO!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I've used standard 1/8" aluminum rivets...
I used a dremel or cut-off tool to put the little notches in them..
it takes time and patients...but it's worked a couple of times for me... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

    The frame has numbers TOO!!!

100% illegal to change the VIN. When a vehicle needs a new VIN (such as rebuilt after being totalled) I believe *all* states assign a new VIN. Mine does.

The chances of getting caught are theoretically very small, since only a frame or engine inspection would/could reveal that the body VIN had been changed.

I understand the love of "sticking it to the man", but in CA's case, the best way to stick it to that state is move out of it. If it were a rolling emissions test (meaning each year smog-exempt years advanced by one) I'd say suck it up, but IIRC, CA's smog exemption year doesn't change.

CA's law is rolling right now, but I won't be exempt until '07. I don't mind doing the smog thing, the truck will pass, the problem is that none of the frickin smog places want to do it. It's so easy for them to smog the newer cars that they don't want to F around with older cars and trucks anymore. They make any excuse that they can then tell me thtat I need to go to the ref. If I could just go to the local smog place and have it taken care of then it wouldn't be a problem at all.

I seem to remember having a VIN plate on my dash, in fact I'm damn near positive that there's one there. I guess if the '73s don't have the dash plate then I'm kind of SOL.

well, if you got a dash pad from an older model, it might not have the cutout, can't remember /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Hmmm, so I might need a dashpad too then... Does everyone agree that '79 was the first year for the dash mounted VIN? Maybe I'm remembering wrong here... I'll check when I get home, just curious about if my mind is going or not. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

so if you had a custom dash (no vin) and had swapped a different engine in to your rig... and used the door-mounted vin from an old rig, the only way to tell would be by looking at the frame? Hmmmm... Im sure there must be a way around that also... lol!

I take it then my '79 frame and '84 cab is illegal?

    It's all good anyway...when I put my K30 cab on my '84, then what? /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif It'll be an '86 then! /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Technically it would only be illegal if one of the vin #'s comes up as stollen for some reason. So make sure they are both clear titles and you keep both your new and old vin tags & titles if both #'s are still on the truck (frame and cab locations). Technically if you "rebuilt" a '74 with a newer better body parts you should not be hassled.

Nope. As long as you can back up all your major vehicle parts with receipts (or even title ifyou never scrapped it) showing the donor VIN, they can't do anything to you, as long as the parts weren't stolen then sold to you.

He's talking about changing the VIN tag only, which if legal, would make theft almost impossible to track.

The frame had no title. I bought it from the junkyard.

If you got it at a wrecking yard they would have the title. You can ask them to give you a photo copy of it (probably a salvage title) just incase you feel you need it...
