Yeah you can run that ratio. but its gonna wrap a bit, I'd suggest you get a 4' BDS (Big Dick Suspension)[IMG] from what I've heard they're hard to beat..roughly 100 to 125 per leaf plus bolts needed....don't forget shocks and brake lines another 250 bux or so[IMG]..good luck

You can use 2.73 gear ratio, but I would not recommend it. I have 3.07 with 31" and will be going to 3.73 for 33"s. Your mileage will improve if you go with lower gears, but not too low or it will also be reduced.

I wouldn't run the 33" with 2.73's. In my opinion that is just asking for trouble from the tranny.

Oh yeah, I forgot the lift kit. You can get a Tuff Country at http://www.offroaddesign.com. People at this forum have said good things about this brand.

James I had a local axel shop quote me 700$ parts and labor for the gear change...do your homework and try it your self, save 300-400 in labor (and spend days if not months figuring out how to setup a ring and pinion). I have been working on my axels for 5 months now (not straight)..[IMG]

Got a 4" BDS kit for my 71 K5 (Leafs all the way around and shocks, U-bolts, steering arm) for $688.00 and love the ride. Only thing is my kit for my year didn't come with the cool round spring pads between the leafs. But still think it was worth the money. Good luck with your ride

Re: how much does a 4\" lift cost and can I run 33s with 2.73s

When I bought my Jimmy it had 33's and 2.73 gears [IMG]. My truck has the 4 speed so you had to use granny low first to start off and drive it like a car 4 speed [IMG]. Fourth was like overdrive and I used to turn about 1700 RPM at 65 MPH. I'd never do it with an automatic though, even with the 4 speed it sucked, so I swapped a 14 FF with 3.73's and a matching 3/4 ton D44. That solved 2 problems at once.[IMG]

Right now I am running 33's with 3.08 gears it's not that bad, but I am going to change them when I get a 12 bolt rear end!

If it ain't a Chevy, don't raise it up!

Re: how much does a 4\" lift cost and can I run 33s with 2.73s

If you're ever gonna run anything bigger than 33's, then you will really need different axles, anyway. So before you invest $400-$800 in gears (more if you want a LSD or locker), make sure that you are going to stick with 10-bolts for the long run.

BTW, there is no rule that you can't run 35's on your 10-bolts, but if you wheel much or put on a lot of miles, you will probably see problems.

Also, even if you are sticking with 10-bolts, it may be easier and about the same cost to swap the axles for different 10-bolts. A pair can be had for $500 or less and 3.73 and 3.07 gears are plentiful.

With 33's and 2.73's, you might as well consider your transmission a poorly geared 3-speed, because you won't be able to lug the engine low enough to use overdrive very much.

"They tell me that you can make it to work without big tires. I'm still not convinced."

Re: how much does a 4\" lift cost and can I run 33s with 2.73s

Overdrive will be all but useless with 2.73's and 33 inch tires. At 65 MPH, in 4th gear, the engine would only be turning about 1260 RPM. That's really lugging the engine. You'd have to leave it in 3rd to get up to a more useful 1800 or so RPM.

For comparison, a set of 4.10 gears would bring your RPM up to about 1900 RPM in 4th gear at 65 MPH .

Find a nice old 3/4-ton 4WD for sale cheap and swap those axles under your K5. Then put the K5 axles under the other truck and sell it as a 1/2-ton. It worked for me. I cleaned the donor truck up nice before selling it and actually made about $600 on the deal. So I got paid for upgrading to bigger axles and got 4.10 gears in the process. [IMG]

If the rear end you swap in has an open diff, then you can easily install the cheapest Detroit Locker that they sell. It replaces the spider gear assembly in the existing case so it costs $300 instead of the $5-600 for most other axles. Plus, on the 14 bolt FF you don't have to mess with the gear backlash and such, so you can install it yourself.

Unless you plan to build your own version of Bigfoot, the rockwells are way too heavy. [IMG]

That lift will cost you about 15,000 bucks, that's right, because before you know it you will want stronger axles, than you will want new gears, then comes the ORD doubler, than extended shocks, ARB, new big block, headers, custom roll cage, paint job, swampers, trick bumpers, winch, are we up to 15,000 yet. Just walk away [IMG]

Steve it is like you read my mind I thot that I would start with a 4" lift and 33s but I guess I will have to start axles and low gears

do you guys thank that 6.72:1 is to low for 38s

and does 450 sound good for a RW 2.5 ton frount end and 350 for a rear end
