I was told by the previous owner of my 454 that it uses two gallons of oil [IMG]. Is this true?

I'm asking this because A) I have to buy it beforehand and B) because it didn't include a dipstick I bought a new one, but I'm not sure how deep I should install it.

It has a standard pan, no fancy stuff. The engine has 2 main bolts and is from a 1979 dually tow truck.

    Thanks.

Two gallons would make 8 quarts.

Most stock pans hold 6 quarts.

When I change the oil in mine, I only put 5 quarts back in since the 1 quart is still in the motor.

So, with that 454 you are looking at, it's possible the guy was telling you the truth. He may have gotten the 7 quart pan. These 7 quart pans are available thru the aftermarket.

What about adding oil until it shows correctly on the dip stick? Just a smart @ss idea! [IMG]

Can something go wrong if too much oil is added?

  5. I am not absolutely sure, but I believe too much oil can hurt an engine just as bad as not enough. Something to due with oil pump failure and bearing life. Also I think you can end up with oil in the combustion chamber as well.

Yep, put in too much oil and the crankshaft will be whipping the oil into a froth. [IMG]
