with minimal mechanics experience, and none in hubs, could i successfully take apart and put back together a stock automatic hub with nothing but your basic tools, a hub nut wrench, and a Chilton repair manual?? sooner the better, thanks...

I think it would be a better bet to just get a set of manual locking hubs, those auto locking hubs are tempermental, well at least mine are.

Yes, it can be done, but you will probably need some snapring pliers and other misc odd tools to get it all the way apart. Don't see any need for a hub nut wrench though, that's only used to get the rotor off the spindle.
