Re: got my front axle.. how is this--spicer hubs?

What type of hub is it.
    There are 2 types:
External (held in by 8 bolts that like to work there way loose) and internal.

Internals came on 77 and newer axles (D44 or 10B)

I have the internals on mine. I have yet to break them but had some problems with them engaging when I packed them with too much grease /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

They work the opposit of a warn type hub. When you lock them a the spring trys to ingage them and when the teeth line up they lock (this is why I had problems...too much grease in the teeth for the spring to overcome).

When you unlock them (1/4 turn) you are fighting against the teeth to disengage them. Warns disengage by spring pressure when they free up (not when you turn the dial). Sometimes I can't turn the dial if the drivetrain is bound up (same with the t-case). If I shift into 2wd while the truck is rolling I have a easy time with the t-case and the hubs then unlock easy as well. If I stop the truck with it in 4wd I often cant move the t-case lever or unlock the hubs!

Overall I like them. The price was right (they came on my truck and another pair on my 3/4-ton D44) and I have had no durability issues with them at all.

Now I am totally confused, I have a d44 1/2 ton off a 72 and my 3/4 ton 10 bolt, the hubs look to be the same except ones black and ones chrome. Do you have pics? Also are all 10 bolt front axles the same or did the switch anything up on them sometime?

Its been brought up a few times, at least once last week. Triaged nailed it, so I won't add anything but to say I like mine.

I have a stamped 74 d44 and it has the internal hubs, with the larger wheel bearings...

I'm a bit confused myself....the spindles and hubs and bearings are way diff from my 84 10 bolt..

Ok, I have the axle now...and its internal style. Does the pre 76 mean its external? and 77-87 mean internal?

I have another question. For the 10 bolt fronts, are all the parts, wheel bearings, ball joints, etc. the same from 77 -90?

For blazer yes, but trucks changed to IFS in 88. I got this front out of a truck so it has to be pre 87... looking at tbhe grille it looks pre 85 i think, not sure /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: got my axle...hubs, whats the diff...?

Is there a thick spacer that is bolted to the wheel hub? When i got my '73 axles, the D44 had what appeared to be internal spicer hubs. There was actually a 1"-2" spacer that the locking hub actually sat in. To use the new external locking hubs, all i had to do was remove the spicers and that spacer. Take a look at that hub, and see if there is one there.

Like Triaged said, the one on the left is the 1st design (bolted to hub), and the one on the right is the 2nd design (held in place with the internal lock ring)
