Hydro-boost brakes?

    My current project is a K30 that I am cutting down to make a Blazer (sort of). Anyway, it has the hydro-boost power brakes and I have never fooled with them before. Seems to me like just more high pressure lines to leak/blow so I thought maybe I would convert it to vac assist. Does anyone have any compelling knowledge/experience one way or the other?

    I have the hydro-boost brakes on my 84 1/2 ton 2x (was a diesel and will soon be gas!) and will be converting to vacume assist when i complete my rebuild. You are deffinately right about the leaks! Everyone says the hydro boost brakes are better. I've had both and realy couldn't tell any difference(sp?).

    Yeah, the only drawback I see is that the vacume booster is bigger and in the way more.

    I'd stick with the hydroboost and carry spare lines for it. Mine works great, but I did blow a high pressure line last summer, I think it was the original. Its a bit hard to steer 15" wide Swampers w/ no assist and 6 psi.

    On a related point, does the hydro boost cause much in the way of additional heat/aeration problems when used in extreme off-road situations?

    Wow, with all the diesel folks on here, I expected to get more feedback on this one. I think I'll just go vacuum to keep things simple and eliminate some pressurized lines. No worries about additional PS heat either.

    For what its worth: All CUCVs and HMMWVs use silicone brake fluid, which is slightly compressable (soft pedal). I believe the Hydraboost compensates alot and provides a pretty firm pedal. I never had a line blow, but ALL CUCVs (and a few HMMWVs) lines weep (no drips, just wetness).

    Some of the big GM Buicks, Caddies (gas) also used hydraboost to work four wheel disk brakes (big brakes, bigger car, little effort).

    Mom used to have an '84 Caprice wagon w/Hydroboost. Gas 305, 700R4.

    My 83 had hydroboost and those were the best feeling/working brakes i've ever had. It also frees up a lot of space under the hood.

    Diesels don't keep up with the vaccum demands of vaccum assisted brakes when your at idle hence hydro boost.

    They are used on a lot of 1 tons, as well as chassis cab and heavy duty applications, ie walk in vans and motor homes. I prefer them to the vaccum assist.
