Finished shaving my 14 bolt last night, went from 9-7/8" of clearance to 10-1/2". Shaved my rock ring to match, I could have done more but I don't have the lip any more and have plenty of beef so I think I'm good to go.
I will do a short review when time permits, maybe this weekend.

Guys,

I was talking to someone at CALROCS this weekend that seemed to know alot about competition modifications. He was telling me I could take my ring gear to a machine shop and have 7/8ths of an inch machined off of it and still be super strong. Then you can cut off the whole bottom of the 14FF and weld on a plate to cover it. This whole operation keeps original strength and will give you about 2.0 - 2.5 inches of extra clearance over stock. I will be checking into how much the machine work will be and the balancing of the ring gear after machining. This sounds like it might be worth the efforts.

Shaveing the ring gear makes me skidish (not what Steve did, what this other guy did), I don't like it at-all. Even if it is done clean, still, you loose contact area, between the ring and pinion

Think about this. Where the ring and pinion contact, where the teath contact each other, thats maybe 3 or 4 square inches. Figure that 3 square inches has to deal with 1,300+ft/lbs of torque, imagine the pressure betweeen the teath...Thats the same resson the 8 and a halfs get smoked, too much contact pressure.
I know, 10.5 (9 5/8 after) vs. 8.5, there is no comparing the two(the 10.5 has way-more leverage than the 8.5), but if you take out part of the ring gear on the 10.5, the differnce is reduced, than add more power, lower (before the R&P) gears...It just makes me skidish...

Than again, I'm going with a reverse 60 in the back, hind siht is 20/20, lets hope it doesn't hurt...
