Well I got pulled over by a Pa. State Trooper tonight.[IMG] He was cool about it and I did not get fined. He pulled me over to let me know I need mudflaps now with the hight of the truck. Anybody have any good ideas on what to do? I hate to degrade the truck and put some ugly mudflaps on but I have a feeling that he will pull me over again if he sees I don't have them and then he might not be as nice about it.

You could buy a set, and just have them in your truck, so if you ever got pulled over again... you could be like
"Oh yeah officer, I was just on my way to get the hardware to put these mudflaps on." and show him the mudflaps you have in the truck. That will probally work for 1 more time.

Hey! I'm in outside of Lancaster, is that mean that next year when I lift my Blazer 4" I will need mudflaps? If so, that sucks!

Find out wht the minimum requirements are first. If it only needs to hang down a few inches it wont look bad.

I have given thought to putting internal flaps in place to keep mud from collecting in the bumper and panels so this is a familiar topic for me. I want something that is not noticeable tho.

hmmmm.... Mudflaps... wow.... I think flaps look cool myself, but I never see them on lifted truks so I don't know what they're like on em... looked good on my stock k5 though

Believe me. The PSP does not like to hear excuses! I know a lot of those guys from work, and they are just plain mean and by the book. For a while they only hired 6+ foot former Marines. They stopped doing that crap a while back though.

I'd get some cheap mudflaps and wander through the hardware store for some appropriate equipment to make some quick disconnects for it. Anything that slips together will work, I can't think of what I'm talking about off the top of my head... I like to let mud fling wherever it will and not be restricted by the mudflaps when off road, so that's what I'd do if harassed about not having them... [IMG]

mud-flap laws seem to vary quite a bit from state to state. In CA your pretty much good if they don't stick out past the fenders. The CA law is pretty vague. It basically says if your tires throw mud or water out of the rear of the vehicle you need mud-flaps. No height, lift or tire size requirements. if a cop wanted to be an a-hole he could give anyone a mud-flap ticket but they usually target people with tires sticking out the sides.

My brother in laws brother is a State Trooper. What pisses me off the mose is that I have passed a bunch of cops before and have had them behind me and never got pulled untill tonight.[IMG] The guy I bought the truck from is a retired State Trooper and I am going to talk to him about it. I have seen a few lifted trucks around here with flaps and they look like sh%^. Also they were on 40 to 44" tires. It should be fun when I step up to 38's next year. I think I will just put the aluminum ones back on that were on when I bought the truck and if he pulls me over again because they are not big enough at least I can say I put them on but you did not tell me they had to be a spacific size.[IMG] What suprized me is that he never asked for my licence or registration and proof of insurance so I figure he already ran the plate before he even stopped me.

Hey join the club. There is a MP here on base with a thing for my truck and mudflaps. I went down, got a copy of the exact reqs for flaps, and built a set for the truck. They attach to the bottom of my bumper with a set of d rings, and I can slip them off and on in about 10 seconds. I remove them for wheeling, then put them back on when I hit town.... sometimes.... I have been pushing the need for them cause its only the one guy that wants to bother me. I have been pulled over like 5 times by him only, and every time he asks where the flaps are. I tell him they are on the floor beside me, he makes me put them on and goes on his way. I am waitin for him to fine me, cause then I can counter charge him for harassment cause I am the only truck he bothers.
Check your laws... here in Alberta Canada, its a requirement on EVERY vehicle to have some sort of deflection device... the size and hieght from the ground is determined by a measurement from the tire. It has NOTHING to do with being lifted here... Its just more noticeable on big trucks.

I believe there are pics of mine in my member gallery. If not try here: http:sites.netscape.net/mikesthmpr/thumper

Just buy a set and stick em on. They aren't that bad (I have a set with Yosemite Sam on them I actually like!). Use some zip ties and when you wheel cut them off and then simply put them back with them when you hit the road... if they are there like the cops were in WA you'll be harrassed constantly. I was stopped all the time but they couldn't do a thing since I was from CA and living in Idaho at the time. They always let me go with a disappointed look.... [IMG]

I got pulled over for flaps about 3 years ago. So i got some real ugly flaps, put them on *yech* and showed them my truck had mudflpas. I had two weeks to comply or I'd have to pay a fine. I got out of the fine and then went home and removed my mudflaps. I haven't been bothered since by the local guys. I did get pulled over in WA state for height and flaps though. The cop was wrong about height but woulda had me on the flaps if I was a WA resident.

Around here if you keep the truck clean and drive like a sane human being they pretty much leave you alone.

or they nail you with a fine and inspection notice.
you get used to the mudflaps after a while
real fun after backing over them 4 or 5 times and having to redo the mounts again and again

I haven't had the inspection order yet, but my Jimmy has an old inspection sticker on the window so they just kinda figure it was recent. If they'd look they'd see it was inspected in 94.

If i get bugged again I'll make some flap hangers that disconnect easy and just throw em in the back when wheeling.

So you got hit by the WA cops too? Is it just me or are those guys really obsessed with them? I never get pulled over for flaps anywhere but there.....

Yeah, I got pulled over on my way home from Portland after wheeling with Mudhog and only a couple hours after getting rear ended by the drunk. The trooper picked me out of a crowd of thousands and made a big production pulling me over. He said "Your bumpers are too high"
I said " No they're not...go ahead and measure them"
The he said " You need mudflaps for this thing and your tires stick out too far"
So I told him I normally run mudflaps and the tires are my 'trail tires'...I then went on to tell him I just got butt-kissed by a drunk in Portland and was just on my way home...he let me go with a warning.[IMG]
This was just South of Seattle..

I went thru this for years, mainly during the eighties when the big truck craz was here in ME.
Today you hardly see any trucks running around with anything over a 35" tire, so I guess law enforcement got there point across. It started out with frame ht. based on GVW and when guys started to add short sections of frame on the front and back to beat that they changed the rules again that said no add ons.
So some then stacked 2 frames hooked together to get around that or big body lifts and the rules were changed again this time they used the frame ht. based on GVW with a bottom of door ht. measurement as well,so this pretty much covered all the bases.
My last two rigs have been pretty conservative, I would love to run 40"-44" tires on 12"-14" but at this point(41yo) I really dont want to be sitting in the cruiser being lectured on the mv rules every time I pull out of the driveway!
The small lift/fender cutting as so far worked out great for me and I have not been stopped yet(kow) but I do get the hard look!!!
You will get hit on tire stick out here but they dont push the mudflap thing, tall rigs just dont look right with flaps in my opinion, they belong on your grandpas truck.
If you look at a IFS GM 8lug truck they come right from the factory with the tread of the tire sticking out past the flare,go fiquire!
